Mid-Year Update on Church Finances
This week, we mailed contribution statements to those who have given to the church in 2013; if you didn't receive one or have questions, please contact us.

As we reach the mid-point of the year, we are pleased to report that our finances are steady: with generous donations in the first half of the year, our income and expenses are in line with our budget. With your continuing help, I believe we can make our commitments for the year, and hope we might even stretch beyond them to meet bigger missional giving goals by year's end.

Theological Good News

Claremont School of Theology's campus

I'm a graduate of Claremont School of Theology, which makes me extra-proud that the new President of our school is coming to be our guest preaching this Sunday, at 9:30 at 11. I say "our" new President because Claremont is a part of our United Methodist Church.

And, since I was there, Claremont has been courageously expanding the frontiers of what theological education can look like, for our time and place. Several years ago, the School of Theology helped launch a new, interfaith religious graduate school, which the School of Theology is now a part of. This is exciting: it means that Christian pastors can study alongside clergy of other faiths. There are some classes and conversations students can share together across faith traditions, and some classes we hold separately to speak to our distinctive Christian witness. I am excited about the ways this better prepares us for ministry in our communities--where our neighborhoods and families include people of different religions. And I am excited about the ways it will help new pastors learn to speak about what it means to be a Christian today.

But worship this Sunday isn't about the good things happening in Claremont; it's about the good news of our faith, and I look forward to what Dr. Kuan will offer us as he shares a message on Sunday, preaching from Hosea 11:1-11.

with gratitude and hope,

Pastor Molly

I am out of the office this week, participating in our Sr High Sierra Service Project mission trip to Los Angeles; I will be back for Sunday, August 4, when we will welcome Rev. Dr. Kah-Jin Jeffrey Kuan, new President of the Claremont School of Theology, to preach in our worship at 9:30 and 11. I will lead worship at 8:30.

Youth Summer Service Trips
As we send this, a group of 22 people are sharing in our Sr. High (9-12th grade) Sierra Service Project trip to Los Angeles. Serving in our own metro area, they are working in South LA with local residents and perhaps some non-profit agencies in the area.

Last week, our Jr High youth spent a week serving with SSP in Coarsegold, CA.

The youth group is so grateful for the continued support of opportunities like this.  Please keep our youth and our adult leaders in your prayers while they travel this summer!
Lay Looker Lay Looker, by Bob Peterson
Read Bob Peterson's column here and on our website!

"Last Sunday our South door Greeters were M/M Ron and Boon Willman who reported that as our church bell rang for the service, three women walked in speaking Spanish. One had some English and it was determined that they had heard the bell and wanted to see the church. They were invited to look at our sanctuary and then... "

Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Kuan
Rev. Dr. Kah-Jin Jeffrey Kuan
President of the Claremont School of Theology
Guest Preacher on August 4 at 9:30 & 11
I am very pleased to announce that Dr. Kuan will preach at our 9:30 and 11 a.m. worship services on Sunday, August 4.
As of July 1, Dr. Kuan is the new President of the Claremont School of Theology.

He is an Ordained Elder in The United Methodist Church who since 2011 has served as dean of Drew University Theological School. Previously, he spent nearly 20 years on the faculties of the Pacific School of Religion and Graduate Theological Union teaching in the areas of Hebrew Bible and Asian and Asian-American hermeneutics.

He comes to leadership at my alma mater, the Claremont School of Theology, at in exciting time in the school's life, as it has recently helped form the new, interfaith Claremont Lincoln University. He brings rich experience in theological education, church leadership, and a passion for the gospel. It has been my joy to know him through other work in our denomination, and it is a great honor to welcome him to preach in our congregation, as he gets to better know the churches in our region during his first months in this role.

Summer Reading Recommendation:
Wonder, by R. J. Palacio
During August, our youth group will be reading and discussing Wonder, by R. J. Palacio. This short book, written to a middle school-aged audience, has a message for people of all ages. If you are looking for a thought-provoking read this summer--and if you want to read along with our young people--you might want to check it out. Written in the voices of young people, it explores the life of a boy born with pronounced physical abnormalities, and invites readers to share in their life and story. You can read a review from the NYTimes here.

Save the Date: Acolyte/Worship Assistant Training
Young people, 4th grade through High School, are invited to join Pastor Molly for an hour-long Acolyte/Worship Assistant Training on Tuesday, September 10 at 3:30 p.m.
