A Special Guest Preacher

I'm very pleased to welcome a special guest preacher to our pulpit this weekend: my father, Rev. Jay Vetter. He's just retired as a United Methodist pastor in the Nebraska Conference. While easily lured west for a visit to his favorite (and only) grandchild, he also is willing to preach for me, in my absence. It's also a special relief to me that he's able to come, since my parents recently moved to one of the areas most affected by last week's devastating flooding in Colorado. Thankfully, they didn't face any direct destruction at their home, and are well. I invite you to keep their community and those nearby in your prayers as so many people deal with dramatic destruction.

The text this week is a wild one--one of the more difficult, confusing and challenging of the parables of Jesus, as it requires we examine what we are most faithful to. It's the kind of text I know he'll enjoying exploring and studying with you. This is one of the things I love about being in church together--we get to wrestle with scripture passages that are complicated, seeking God's message in them for us, today.

I will be away this Sunday and most of next week, participating in a Board Meeting of the General Board of Church and Society for the United Methodist Church, and then at a Clergy Convocation of our California-Pacific Annual Conference. I trust you will be in good hands, though! I am very grateful for my father's willingness to jump in, and for the love to tricky scripture passages, which he certainly passed along to me. :)

with gratitude and hope,

Pastor Molly

Support our Building Plans
You are invited to contribute to a special, one-time building fund campaign for our church, which will allow us to undertake a list of important and visible renovation projects that will improve our campus and its ability to be in ministry. This campaign continues the momentum of building work we've built over the past year or 2; you can read the whole list of what we've done and what we plan to do here.

One of the many projects this campaign will enable is to renovate and equip Epworth Patio for our youth group. When our Middle School and High School youth are all on campus, they don't fit it the youth rooms--the patio will open up a second space and a beautiful common space for this growing ministry. Your donations will purchase durable patio furniture, and also beautify this wonderful, outdoor space; we will also replace the tables currently stored there with new, collapsible ones that are more flexible and convenient. It's fun to imagine the ways the youth will use the patio--the meaningful conversations, laughter and fun that will fill the area as young people are nurtured in deepening their faith and sense of community with one another.

Contributions to this one-time building campaign are above and beyond our regular tithes and offerings, which support our ongoing programs and ministries. To contribute, simply mark your gift for the Building Fund, and send it to the office or put it in the offering plate. You can read the letter our Trustees sent to the congregation hereThanks for your support, as we seek to strengthen our ministries together!
Worship Survey:
please help us know more about what works in worship
We hope you will take time to fill out a survey for the primary worship service you attend. (The survey will be open for one more week.) Click on just the hour you attend: 8:30, 9:30 or 11:00 to take the survey. We would love to know more about why you attend when you do, and what would help deepen your faith.
Sound Board
Trustees Work Day:
Saturday, Sept 21, 8:30am-noon
Sound System Installation

Our Church Trustees invite you to join them for a morning of volunteer work at the church on Saturday, September 21 from 8:30-noon. The work will primarily be concerned with continuing the installation of our new sound system--people with skill in running and soldering wires are especially welcomed, though volunteers of all skill-levels will be useful! Questions? Contact Chair of Trustees, Don Burrows.
Help Make Prayer
Worship Banners
Thank you to everyone who has shared prayers as a part of our new prayer banners for worship. Many of your prayers are already hanging in the sanctuary. Still, we invite you to continue to help us make prayer banners by writing more prayers on paper crosses. For several more Sundays, colored crosses will be available, in all our worship services; you are encouraged to add your own prayer(s) to them. Any prayer--whatever prayer is on your heart--is a beautiful contribution to this paper tapestry of our congregation.
Meagan Burrows
New Youth Ministry Assistant
Our Staff-Parish Relations Committee is pleased to announce the hire of our new Part-time Youth Ministry Assistant, Meagan Burrows. We are thrilled to welcome Meagan to our staff, after having been blessed to have her gifts in ministry and passion for Christ and for this congregation for many years. As Youth Ministry Assistant, she will work with our Youth Director, Caroline Dawes, particularly in leadership of the Junior High Youth Group. Please help us in welcoming Meagan into this new role!

"My, my...What a busy church! Our church leaders have begun implementing the Jump In theory by inviting all of us to do something, such as helping the work party Saturday, Sept. 21st, 8:30 AM to noon.

I came home from church last Sunday with information from the Trustees about the above mentioned work party and several other activities. For instance, beginning Tuesday, October 8 a small group class on faith will be led by Pastor Molly. Now, who wouldn't want to take time to do that? Most everyone I know in this church wants to add to their faith and here's an easy way to learn how in a few Tuesday evenings in a row. Another planned event..."

Editor's Note: The Socks and Soup luncheon on the 29th is in place of our regular potluck.  All are invited to attend this special event hosted by UMKIC. (see below)

Join our New Prayer Quilt Ministry
We are starting a prayer quilt ministry, which will offer a chance for people to give prayer quilts to others who are in special need of prayer.

On Saturday, September 28, from 10am-noon, we will meet up at the church for sewing and preparing our first quilts. Anyone (regardless of sewing ability) is welcome to join us then. You are also invited to bring with you a 12"x12" pieced block to add into a sampler quilt--you can use any pattern for your square, as long as you use blue fabrics (in any shade of blue). There are lots of patterns for quilt blocks online--you'll find a long list of here; you can stop by the church office to pick up some pieces of blue fabrics if that helps. You do NOT need to bring a block to come on the 28th, though!

We encourage you to bring your sewing machine and/or iron to the meeting. RSVP to Pastor Molly--this workshop will be hosted by Brigitte Ahrens and Pastor Molly Vetter.

Additionally, you can support this quilt ministry in several ways: by piecing your own quilt top (lap quilt size--approximately 40"x60"), by donating 100% cotton quilting fabric or quilt batting or #5 Pearl Cotton thread.

Our October prayer quilting meet-up is scheduled for Friday, October 25 from 10am-noon.

Jump Into Choir
All God's creatures got a place in the choir.
Some sing low and some sing higher.
Some sing out loud on the telephone wire...
Just sayin'

The Beachfaith Choir jumped into worship last week with inspired singing, and this week the beat goes on.

The Gospel message for Sunday says that we cannot serve two masters, so the anthem asks God to guide us in God's way, lest we forget our goal.  Get ready to tap your feet to "Order My
Chancel Choir
 Steps" this week.

Everyone remember to give a warm welcome to our returning singers and to our new alto, Moni, and check out the website for our recording of "Better than a Hallelujah."

Please know you are welcome to lend your voice in the choir--come any Wednesday evening to be a part of this ministry. Rehearsal on Wednesday from 7:30 to 9:00 pm.
