A Word in Gratitude for Good Neighbors

Photo of friends from SBCC from a Daily Breeze story on the church, published last Sunday

I feel a special sadness this week, preparing for church, knowing that this week marks the final worship service of our neighbors, the South Bay Christian Church. In the 103 years of that congregation's history, I suspect there are volumes worth of stories of ways they have shared faithful, loving service with our community. From the beginning, they've been a partner in our Shared Bread meal, cooking the Wednesday meal once a month over these past 20 years. Their free pancakes on Sundays have been a blessing to many. Through Church Women United, their Women's Circle has been a friend to our UMW, and they share a vision for mission, service, welcome and love that is inspiring. I know that several of you have been actively involved in extending care and welcome to people from SBCC, and know that you all will continue to do so as you hold their congregation in prayer this week.

After a story on their congregation ran in the Daily Breeze last Sunday, a community member was inspired to call me on Monday. A longtime Redondo Beach resident--now nearly 80--she wanted to offer her appreciation to us for welcoming members of SBCC as it closes. She's grateful for the compassion and love shared among our churches. Just a few minutes after we hung up, she called back again. She wanted us to know that she's Jewish, and has been involved in Temple Menorah from its beginning. She shared memories of Saturdays spent at Sabbath School in classrooms at our church in the late 1940's, at the beginning of their congregation; she remembers and is grateful for our support and hospitality then.

We are part of a story that is so much bigger than we can know. It's a story of grace and hospitality that runs so deep that it's tucked into stories we haven't yet heard. It's a story that connects us to one another in a family of God that extends far beyond our walls, and reaches toward a dream we are only beginning to see.

For the ways we have long been a part of that legacy, for the opportunity to share in it now, for the church we are yet becoming, I give thanks to God.

with gratitude and hope,

Pastor Molly

Youth Summer Service Trips
As we send this, 15 of our church people are on the Jr. High (7 & 8th grade) Sierra Service Project mission trip to Coarsegold, CA, where they are working with a local Native American tribe.

This coming Sunday, a group of 22 people will share in our Sr. High (9-12th grade) Sierra Service Project trip to Los Angeles. Serving in our own metro area, they will be working in South LA with local residents and perhaps some non-profit agencies in the area.  For both camps, typical projects include painting, roofing, building or repairing porches and ramps. We will send our Sr High team off with a special prayer during worship at 11 on Sunday.

The youth group is so grateful for the continued support of opportunities like this.  Please keep our youth and our adult leaders in your prayers for these two weeks!

Read Bob Peterson's column here and on our website!

" Due to a lot of conversation on my part, I left our church facility a little late last Sunday and as I walked by the front of the Sanctuary there was Sharon Elenbaas replacing flowers at the UMW maintained Peace Pole. Sharon, who is President of the United Methodist Women had her gloves on and was finishing the planting of new flowers to keep it looking beautiful. In visiting with Sharon I wondered aloud..."

Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Kuan
Rev. Dr. Kah-Jin Jeffrey Kuan
President of the Claremont School of Theology
Guest Preacher on August 4 at 9:30 & 11
I am very pleased to announce that Dr. Kuan will preach at our 9:30 and 11 a.m. worship services on Sunday, August 4.
As of July 1, Dr. Kuan is the new President of the Claremont School of Theology.

He is an Ordained Elder in The United Methodist Church who since 2011 has served as dean of Drew University Theological School. Previously, he spent nearly 20 years on the faculties of the Pacific School of Religion and Graduate Theological Union teaching in the areas of Hebrew Bible and Asian and Asian-American hermeneutics.

He comes to leadership at my alma mater, the Claremont School of Theology, at in exciting time in the school's life, as it has recently helped form the new, interfaith Claremont Lincoln University. He brings rich experience in theological education, church leadership, and a passion for the gospel. It has been my joy to know him through other work in our denomination, and it is a great honor to welcome him to preach in our congregation, as he gets to better know the churches in our region during his first months in this role.

RB1st Mid-Year Update on Church Finances
This week, we mailed contribution statements to those who have given to the church in 2013; if you didn't receive one or have questions, please contact us.

As we reach the mid-point of the year, we are pleased to report that our finances are steady: with generous donations in the first half of the year, our income and expenses are in line with our budget. With your continuing help, I believe we can make our commitments for the year, and hope we might even stretch beyond them to meet bigger missional giving goals by year's end.
Summer Reading Recommendation:
Wonder, by R. J. Palacio
During August, our youth group will be reading and discussing Wonder, by R. J. Palacio. This short book, written to a middle school-aged audience, has a message for people of all ages. If you are looking for a thought-provoking read this summer--and if you want to read along with our young people--you might want to check it out. Written in the voices of young people, it explores the life of a boy born with pronounced physical abnormalities, and invites readers to share in their life and story. You can read a review from the NYTimes here.

Save the Date: Acolyte/Worship Assistant Training
Young people, 4th grade through High School, are invited to join Pastor Molly for an hour-long Acolyte/Worship Assistant Training on Tuesday, September 10 at 3:30 p.m.
Volunteers Wanted: Quilting Ministry
Pastor Molly is looking for quilters, sew-ers and willing hands to explore the possibility of starting a new prayer quilt ministry. If you are interested, please contact her by email or in the church office.
A Special Note of Thanks...
This summer at Vacation Bible School the children discovered how they can serve Jesus while serving others in their own backyard and beyond. We encouraged the children to raise money to donate during VBS by bringing in coins. All donations went to Back2Back Ministries. Back2Back Ministries is a Christian orphan care ministry which exists to love and care for orphans and impoverished children in various countries. We have just received a warm Thank You card from the ministry, for the donation of $211 that was given and raised by our own children.
