Parking Lot Repairs
Our parking lot is scheduled for some much needed TLC the week of June 17th.  We will be digging up the entire lot, regrading, filling, surfacing, and painting the entire lot.  It is a week long project, so our lot will be closed to cars through the 21st.  The office will remain open with access from the street along the pathway in front of the nursery building.

In Praise of Sunday School Teachers

I got an extra surprise on my visit to Nebraska last weekend: I got to preach at the church I grew up in. This wasn't the plan--it was supposed to be my dad's last sermon there before his retirement. (He's appointed to a different church in that town now, but they share in many ministries together and often the clergy share pulpits with one another.) They'd planned a special reception for him afterwards. But that Sunday morning, he woke up early, and sick.

It was, honestly, a treat to return to a church I'd left after 8th grade--23 years ago--as preacher. I treasure that congregation as having blessed me with many things: a sense that church was a place I belonged and would always be welcome, that church is fun and I've invited to bring my creativity and gifts to it, that I am a part of the Body of Christ. And, delightfully, there were still familiar faces there, including Bonnie, who'd been my beloved Kindergarten Sunday School teacher.

I treasure having grown up in a church that valued children. I am grateful to get to serve in one now.

This Sunday, as we honor Kathy Martens and celebrate the faithful and fun ministry for children and their families that she's grown here, I'm going to be looking forward in my imagination-to 23 years into the future, imagining what it might look like to glimpse of some of the ways the message of Christ's grace has changed the lives of the young people who are here now.  I give thanks for Sunday School teachers, past, present and future, and the young people they teach!

with gratitude,

Pastor Molly

Ice Cream Sunday
Ice Cream Sundaes, celebrating Kathy Martens
Sunday, June 2, 10:30-11 a.m.

Join us for a special (& tasty) celebration of our Children and Family Ministries, to thank Kathy Martens for her years directing this ministry.

All members and friends of the church and our ministries are welcome to join us for the celebration and fellowship. We will have a special opportinity to give thanks to God for the beatiful things that have happened in our Childrens and Family Ministries during the past decade, with the leadership of Kathy Martens, who will leave her position as Director of this ministry at the end of June.

It's not a "farewell," and we're very glad Kathy and her family will continue to be active leaders in our congregation, but we don't want to miss this opportunity to give thanks for these years of leadership and the wonderful ministries she's helped grow.

Ice cream will be provided--just come ready to celebrate! Thank you to our United Methodist Women for hosting the celebration.

A Special Gift for Kathy:

We are preparing a book full of memories for Kathy, at the end of her term as Director of Children's Ministries.  She's served us so lovingly and faithfully for 10 years that we think this will be a special way to show her how much we love her back.  We hope each family or church group will participate.

If you haven't been able to pick up a blank page here on Sunday morning, any 12"x12" page will work. Our due-date for pages is June 9.

We want each page to be your own creation.  Some ideas include: write your own special and unique memories, include photographs or perhaps programs/artwork from special events in which your child participated, a special poem that reminds you of Kathy, a loving letter or meaningful sketches...

If you have any questions, please contact Sabrina Callender-Clewett at 310-490-6767 or [email protected] or Johnna Kosnoff at 310-343-8699 or [email protected]

All are welcome to join us for the banquet! Tickets are available on the patio or at the door:  Adults $12, Youth & Children $5.  As in years past, we will have a basket in the hall for each of the seniors, in case you wish to bring cards, notes, etc.

"Last Sunday, Memorial Day Week-end Sunday, we were privileged to hear Kim Edwards preach excellently about helping others when they sorrow or are in difficult times physically or otherwise. Kim is a student at Claremont School of Theology and a close friend of Pastor Molly Vetter. There were many in attendance even though it was a holiday week-end and the weather was gorgeous so our Pastor can know that all went well in her absence.

Summer Intern: Mele Tuuholoaki
Our church is pleased to welcome a Summer Intern in Children's Ministry this year: Mele Tuuholoaki. Mele just finished her first year at Vanguard University, and has been working in children's ministry while at school. Back home for the summer, we are pleased that she is able to share her gifts in this work with our church during this transition time for our Children and Family Ministry.

She begins, officially, today, and will be with us through mid-August. She is already hard at work helping Ms. Kathy prepare for Vacation Bible School and summer Sunday School; she'll be working on some special Family Ministries over the summer, too. Please help us welcome her to our staff, and hold her ministry in your prayers.
