Led By the Spirit

youth pray before worship
The Youth Band prays before leading worship.

It's Pentecost on Sunday. As we celebrate the birthday of the Church, the story of the Holy Spirit's descent in the Book of Acts reminds us of the beautiful power and blessing that the Spirit brings. It's not at all tied-down or tidy, but it's beautiful.

On the Day of Pentecost, the Spirit allowed everyone in the international crowd in Jerusalem to hear the gospel in their own language. It was unity, but not uniformity--unity that came in wild, chaotic diversity.

That's the Spirit whose guidance I seek in my life and in the life of our congregation. Over the next six weeks, I'm asking  you to join me in a special prayer project, as we pray the words of our church's vision and mission statements. Each week, I'll give you a new way to pray. Who knows what it will bring; I trust it's going to be good. Better than our life could be without it.

with gratitude,

Pastor Molly

p.s. We're excited about our new church directory, but we are still missing photos of some of you. We've extended the submission deadline to this coming Monday, so please email us a photo of you or your family and we'll make sure you're included!

Led by the Spirit
This Sunday, May 19 we will celebrate Pentecost with spirit-filled worship and great joy!
It will also mark the start of an important new project for our congregation: 6 weeks of prayer for our church.
Each Sunday over these 6 weeks, we will give you a special way to pray for that week; each of the prayers will be guided by the words of our congregational mission statement. We will share the prayers in worship, via email, and through a link on our website. We hope and trust that this will be a powerful and formative time for our life as a church, as we together lift our prayers to God.
A Memorial Service for Stephen Davison, son of Marv and Donna Davison, will be held this Saturday, May 18, at 1:00 p.m. There will be a potluck reception afterwards; you are welcome to bring a favorite dish to share.
Photo Directory Deadline EXTENSION:
NEXT MONDAY
If you didn't get your photo taken at church in the last two months, there's still time to send us your own photo.
Send it to the church by Monday, May 20th.
Ice Cream Sunday
Ice Cream Sundaes, celebrating Kathy Martens
Sunday, June 2, 10:30-11 a.m.

Join us for a special (& tasty) celebration of our Children and Family Ministries, to thank Kathy Martens for her years directing this ministry.

All members and friends of the church and our ministries are welcome to join us for the celebration and fellowship. We will have a special opportinity to give thanks to God for the beatiful things that have happened in our Childrens and Family Ministries during the past decade, with the leadership of Kathy Martens, who will leave her position as Director of this ministry at the end of June.

It's not a "farewell," and we're very glad Kathy and her family will continue to be active leaders in our congregation, but we don't want to miss this opportunity to give thanks for these years of leadership and the wonderful ministries she's helped grow.

Ice cream will be provided--just come ready to celebrate! Thank you to our United Methodist Women for hosting the celebration.

A Special Gift for Kathy:

We want to present Kathy with a book full of memories at the end of her term as Director of Children's Ministries.  She's served us so lovingly and faithfully for 10 years that we think this will be a special way to show her how much we love her back.  We hope each family will participate.  Circles, Groups, Youth and kids are welcome to prepare their individual pages too.  We may have a multi-volume Memory Book but that's even better!

We are not setting "rules" for the book, except the size of page (12x12) and the due-date (June 9).

We want each page to be your own creation.  Some ideas include: write your own special and unique memories, include photographs or perhaps programs/artwork from special events in which your child participated, a special poem that reminds you of Kathy, a loving letter or meaningful sketches...

You may select and purchase your own special color or design of 12x12 scrapbook paper if you'd like. We will have pages available on the patio, starting Sunday, May 19 so that you may pick up a sheet for your family, take it home and decorate it.  We need you to return it the office by June 9th.

We are not even going to try to keep the creation of this Memory Book a surprise for Kathy.  But, don't show her your pages because that part should be a surprise!

If you have any questions, please contact Sabrina Callender-Clewett at 310-490-6767 or [email protected] or Johnna Kosnoff at 310-343-8699 or [email protected]

"Last Sunday, Mother's Day, following the 9:30 AM worship service, our Church patio was very crowded with people. There were mothers with flowers provided at church, children excited about Mother's Day and the abundant refreshments available. We fathers happily enjoyed it all. To my memory it was about as large a crowd as we have seen, augmented a bit by..."

Volunteer Opportunities:
There are a multitude of ways you can volunteer through the church, to support our ministries and programs. Whether you are a student looking for a good way to earn community service hours, or someone looking for a good way to use your retirement, or anyone else, we invite you to serve with us. Here are just a couple of our current opportunities:

Sunday Nursery Volunteers: Caring volunteers would assist our nursery staff in providing care for infants and young children during a Sunday worship service. Volunteers could work once a month or more. Skills with caring for young children and patience are required. Interested people should contact Kathy Martens, Director of Children and Family Ministries to apply.

Music Library HelpersTemporary volunteers would help organize and shelve our choral music library, following recent renovations in the Choir Room. Ability to lift small boxes of music and good handwriting are good skills for this job. Interested? Contact Linda Waterman, Director of Music Ministries.

Thank you for your generosity on Mother's Day!
UMKIC kids want to thank you for your support last Sunday.  Together we raised $370 dollars in gift cards, collected 800 diapers, 200 wipes, 13 receiving blankets,36 of the most adorable little newborn clothes, 12 pairs of little itty bitty socks, enough specialized baby laundry detergent for 64 loads, 20 bottles of baby shampoo, 10 bottles of baby lotion, 1 container of baby powder, 1 jar of vaseline and a few extra special baby toys!!!

What a fantastic way to honor expectant mothers at Casa de los Angelitos!

Thank you to everyone who supported our latest fundraising efforts.  Dinner at Stacked brought in over $80 and the Pampered Chef raised more than $335 for the Women's Retreat Fund.

Chancel Choir
There's Place For You in the Choir...
Our Chancel Choir shares a musical message each week in our 11:00 worship service, and anyone is welcome to join! New members are always welcome.

Come (any week) for Wednesday evening rehearsal (from 7:30 to 9 p.m.), Sunday warm-up/rehearsal at 10 a.m., and be ready to sing in worship at 11:

On May 26, the featured anthem is "Shall We Gather at the River," arranged in a beautiful pairing with "Deep River."  These timeless hymn spirituals have inspired generations to count on God's endless love.  This would be a great week to come and sing with us--at rehearsal on the 22nd and then in church on Sunday. You will be humming be beautiful music all week!
