Building On a Solid Foundation

I'm continually inspired by the dedication and humble service shown by our congregation. This week, I had occasion to tell several people about our Shared Bread meal on Wednesday. And, for the past couple of weeks, Joe Zeiler has been hard at work putting a fresh coat of paint on our nursery and children's classrooms.

It feels so good to be in a space that is filled with this level of dedication and involvement. Everything new and fresh we do today gets added onto such a beautiful, solid foundation of faithful ministry.

I like to imagine the generations that will come after us, sharing Christ's love graciously in their own way. I trust it will be beautiful.

with gratitude and hope,

Pastor Molly

All-Church Sunday School
Open Meeting
Everyone is invited to see what's up with our Sunday School programs this year! Whether you have kids or not, we hope you'll come see what is going on this year at our Jump Into Sunday School Open Meeting, Sunday September 15, between 10:30 & 11 a.m. in Epworth Lounge. (A 20 minute presentation followed by an invitation to see our newly painted and decorated classrooms)
Support our Building Plans
Our Trustees have been hard at work over the past year, building on momentum from our Bell Tower renovation and leading us through a long list of projects to take care of this facility and make our campus more beautiful. Now they're ready to ask for your help.

We have building plans that will improve a number of areas here: making more room for our youth group (since they've outgrown their room!), improving spaces for children, and maintaining Fellowship Hall where we host Shared Bread, among other things. You can read the whole list of what we've done and what we plan to do here.

All the work we've done so far is paid for. If we receive $70,000 in gifts to our 2nd Century Maintenance Fund, we believe we can accomplish our whole list of new projects. Contributions to this one-time building campaign are above and beyond our regular tithes and offerings, which support our ongoing programs and ministries.

To contribute, simply mark your gift for the Building Fund, and send it to the office or put it in the offering plate. Representatives from our Board of Trustees will be in all our worship services this Sunday to share more about this project. You can read the letter they sent to our members here.

Thanks for your support, as we seek to strengthen our ministries together!
Worship Survey:
please help us know more about what works in worship
We hope you will take time to fill out a survey for the primary worship service you attend. Click on just the hour you attend: 8:30, 9:30 or 11:00 to take the survey. We would love to know more about why you attend when you do, and what would help deepen your faith.
Jump In Sunday:
Help Make Prayer Worship Banners

We invite you to help us make beautiful new prayer banners for our worship by writing a prayer of your own on a paper cross. Again this Sunday, colored crosses will be available, in all our worship services, and everyone is encouraged to add their own prayer(s) to one. They will be put together as new banners for the sanctuary this fall. Any prayer--whatever prayer is on your heart--is a beautiful contribution to this paper tapestry of our congregation.
Register Children and Youth for Church Activities!
Hey it is that time of year again. If you missed the registration table last week, please take a moment to fill out the 2013-2014 permission slip and turn it in.  download and print forms to fill out ahead of time here.
Jump Into Choir: Wednesday Rehearsals Have Begun!
Chancel Choir

Our Church choir is back to it's weekly Wednesday rehearsals, from 7:30-9pm.

This week in church:

In the gospel lesson (Luke 15:1-10) Jesus' parable of the lost sheep and lost coin describes the joy in heaven when the lost are found. We can imagine that it is better than anything.  Amy Grant says the joy is even "Better Than a Hallelujah" which is exactly what we are singing for Music Ministry on Sunday.  Tune in.

Please know you are welcome to lend your voice in the choir--come any Wednesday evening to be a part of this ministry.

Lay Looker Lay Looker, by Bob Peterson

Editor's Note: Did you catch last week's Beach Reporter article about Bob?  He was recently honored for 62 years of service to Rotary International in Hermosa Beach. Read the entire article here.

"Life in our church is rather like a game of group jump rope. It takes a certain rhythm of life to make it all go well. I got that from Pastor Molly's sermon last Sunday and as I look back on her presentation of scripture and how it moves us into action as Christians, I see her as the Huell Howser of Redondo Beach First United Methodist Church. Pastor Molly is the most enthusiastic promoter of scripture and its meanings this church has ever had. Way to go, Molly. The best example of what I mean was last Sunday's "Jump In" message.

Last Tuesday's fund raiser effort caught me not feeling like helping Chili's restaurant, but wanting to help the church, so..."

Sound Board
Trustees Work Day:
Saturday, Sept 21, 8:30am-noon
Sound System Installation

Our Church Trustees invite you to join them for a morning of volunteer work at the church on Saturday, September 21 from 8:30-noon. The work will primarily be concerned with continuing the installation of our new sound system--people with skill in running and soldering wires are especially welcomed, though volunteers of all skill-levels will be useful! Questions? Contact Chair of Trustees, Don Burrows.
New Curriculum for Sunday School Starts This Week
For Children (age 3-3rd grade):
A new Sunday School curriculum is coming this Fall, called "Spark."

Spark lessons are based on the same Bible texts as Pastor Molly preaches on, using the Revised Common Lectionary--this will help kids get more out of both Worship and Sunday School.  It also means that your kids will get the same message on a Sunday morning that you do!

4 Reasons we're excited about Spark!

1) Spark is bible centered programming at its best. Kids will be interacting with their Bibles in every lesson

2) Spark is action packed with hands-on activities such as interactive games and creative crafts

3) Lessons are presented in both a large group setting and separate age-level classes - allowing us to meet every child's learning needs.

4) This curriculum is EASY and convenient for our volunteers- empowering leaders to feel confident in their teaching with simple on-line leader guides and lesson prep videos.

For Church R Us (4th & 5th Grades):
For our Church R Us class, we are using a curriculum called

Connect, which gives kids a better understanding of how the Bible stories weave together.  The lessons take us through the bible chronologically in 2 years, helping children explore themes and ideas of each story, and the bible as an entire book. Each week includes a fun introduction, time to read the scripture, talk about the lesson as a group, watch a fun video illustration, and if time permits, do an activity. It is a fun way to transition this age group into thinking deeper about how the bible applies to our lives.

For Middle School (Grades 6-8):
The Middle School (6-8th grade) class, which meets every other week, gives youth get the opportunity to do some deeper bible study, and also spend time in worship regularly.  For the first 6 lessons, we will be using a series from the Connect Curriculum that takes us through major stories in the Gospels and shows the parallels in several stories.  In the Spring, we will be exploring the life and writings of Paul in the New Testament.

Also, be sure to attend our

"Jump into Sunday School" Open Meeting THIS Sunday, September 15th from 10:30am-11am

Everyone is invited to attend and hear about the many
ways to be a part of this ministry!
MB Fair
Church Family Game Booth at the Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair

Our church will host a game booth at the Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair on Saturday and Sunday, October 5-6; families are encouraged to volunteer for 2-hour shifts during the festival days, to host a game booth and share the loving spirit of our church with the community. The booth is planned as a collaboration between our Stewardship Committee and our youth and children's ministries--sign up on Jump In Sunday or by contacting Ernie in the Church Office.

Join our New Prayer Quilt Ministry
We are starting a prayer quilt ministry, which will offer a chance for people to give prayer quilts to others who are in special need of prayer.

On Saturday, September 28, from 10am-noon, we will meet up at the church for sewing and preparing our first quilts. Anyone (regardless of sewing ability) is welcome to join us then. You are also invited to bring with you a 12"x12" pieced block to add into a sampler quilt--you can use any pattern for your square, as long as you use blue fabrics (in any shade of blue). There are lots of patterns for quilt blocks online--you'll find a long list of here; you can stop by the church office to pick up some pieces of blue fabrics if that helps. You do NOT need to bring a block to come on the 28th, though!

We encourage you to bring your sewing machine and/or iron to the meeting. RSVP to Pastor Molly--this workshop will be hosted by Brigitte Ahrens and Pastor Molly Vetter.

Additionally, you can support this quilt ministry in several ways: by piecing your own quilt top (lap quilt size--approximately 40"x60"), by donating 100% cotton quilting fabric or quilt batting or #5 Pearl Cotton thread.

Our October prayer quilting meet-up is scheduled for Friday, October 25 from 10am-noon.

A Small Group Class for Adults on Faith

Pastor Molly will lead a new seven-session class on faith on Tuesday nights, starting October 8, from 7:15-8:30. This adult course imaginatively explores central topics of Christianity. In each session, we will watch a video featuring a leading voice from the Christian faith, spend time on personal reflection and journaling, and share ideas with the group. Each session delves into a faith topic: God, religion, Jesus, salvation, the cross, the Bible and church.

It is recommended that participants purchase a $15 workbook designed for the class; RSVP if you would like to participate so we can order the books for you.
