A Legacy of Reconciliation and Justice

Today marks Nelson Mandela's 95th birthday. Even as he struggles with health and is hospitalized, his birthday is an occasion to remember and celebrate a remarkable legacy of work to overcome the ugly history of racism and apartheid in South Africa.

Addressing the Methodists in his country in the 1990's, he noted the role of the church in educating black South Africans, in standing alongside those who struggled for freedom, and even in having leaders imprisoned and the church declared an illegal organization by the apartheid government.

As the evil, divisive powers of racism and prejudice continue to undermine the freedom and equality we aspire to as a nation, church and community, I pray that our own generations will have the courage and strength to work for the kind of justice that belongs in Mandela's legacy--one that seeks to hear the stories and know the truth, and one that trusts in the power of forgiveness and reconciliation. I believe that it's the kind of work that makes us truly the church.

with gratitude and hope,

Pastor Molly

Youth Summer Service Trips
WOW!  This summer we are sending a group of 15  to Jr. High (7 & 8th grade) Sierra Service Project and a group of 22 to Sr. High (9-12th grade) SSP.

The journey begins this Sunday as our Jr. High team departs for Coarsegold, CA to work with a local Native American tribe for the week.  Our Sr. High team will be leaving the following Sunday, but the journey is not far....Los Angeles. They will be working in South LA with local residents and perhaps some non-profit agencies in the area.  For both camps, typical projects include painting, roofing, building or repairing porches and ramps.

The youth group is so grateful for the continued support of opportunities like this.  We will be thinking of you on our journey, and hope you will keep us in your prayers for the next two weeks!

"Everyone who uses our church parking lot has noticed the new surface, the new painted stripes and now the new safety fence designed to make certain people don't fall down the slope near the handicapped parking area. The Trustees have had their hands full doing all this work and making sure it is completed correctly as well as paid for promptly. We thank them all.

Good News from our Youth Director:
Hey Congregation!  Here are a couple of things that you might be interested to know about:

While planning this year's Youth Sunday, our youth decided to create a "commercial" for youth group. They planned, directed, and produced the entire thing.  It was even edited by Jordan Uran, one of our Juniors.  If you missed Youth Sunday, thanks to Jim Howard, you can now see it here, in the "Downloads" section of our website.

Early in June, many of our Sr. High youth hosted "Coffeehouse Night."  This event was created as a way for youth to draw support from their community friends for Sierra Service Project (our upcoming service trip).  With the help of a few awesome dads, they transformed the patio into a very cool music venue.  Erin South was the lead organizer, gathering about 20 acts for the evening, which included bands, singers, instrumentalists, etc.  Emily Horowitz led the bake sale in Epworth, which had amazing cheesecakes, brownies, and treats. Their intention was to offer something that would be fun, affordable, and appealing to their peers.  They had a turn out of over 100 people (mostly youth) and raised almost $400 in profit.

Thanks to all who helped make Youth Sunday and Coffeehouse a success!
