The Life and Times of Little Jimmy B

Director:  Alison McDonald  

Synopsis: This film is a portrait of a young Black writer isolated in the God-fearing ghetto of Depression era Harlem. Rejected by his mother and his best friend, Jimmy seeks refuge in his relationship with Glenda, a prostitute. Herself a lost soul, she cannot comfort or console him, but offers him something he's never had before - acceptance.

Synopsis: The film follows the work of Ekere Tallie, a female poet living in Amsterdam. She uses her poems to speak out on sexual violence against women, racism and other injustices.

Sonia Sanchez: Shake Loose Memories

Directors: Jamal Joseph, Rachel Watanabe-Batton

Synopsis: A musical and poetic journey through the life, art and activism of Sonia Sanchez. Sanchez is a poetry icon, professor emeritus at Temple University, cofounder of the Black Arts Movement, pioneer of the Black Studies Program at San Francisco State and a tireless fighter for human rights. Sanchez's poetry, performance and reflections weave together to create a moving "cine poem." Featuring performances of her works by Amiri Baraka, Oscar Brown Jr., T.C. Carson, and Toshi Reagon.

Panel Discussion

Poets Sonia Sanchez, Ekere Tallie, filmmaker Alison McDoanld and author/filmmaker Jamal Joseph (Panther Baby) will participate in a conversation on the history of activism in Black literature and a discussion on the films presented. Maitefa Angaza, the managing editor of African Voices and c0-producer of the film In Our Heads About Our Hair, will moderate.

REEL SISTERS of the DIASPORA SEEKS ORIGINAL

WORKS For FILM FESTIVAL

 

Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival & Lecture Series is seeking films directed, written or produced by women of color. Film shorts, animation, works-in-progress, narratives, features, documentaries and experimental works are eligible. Filmmakers will have their original works viewed at the 15th Annual Reel Sisters Film Festival at Long Island University, Kumble Theater in Brooklyn from October 13-14, 2012.

Please include a short biography and film synopsis. Entries must be submitted on 1/2" NTSC VHS videotape or PAL DVD (Region free DVDs. Entry fee is $30 (Deadline: June 11, 2012).  

 

Reel Sisters is presented by African Voices magazine. The festival committed to providing opportunities for women of color in the film industry. Reel Sisters provides professional workshops for emerging women filmmakers wishing to improve their craft and gain access to the resources they need to succeed in the film industry. The festival offers workshops and panels on financing film projects, documentary filmmaking, screenwriting and exploring new opportunities in film on the Internet.
