New Guardianship Rules

Under rule changes from the Ohio Supreme Court that took effect June 1, any individual or entity that has been designated as a guardian to an adult in Ohio must attend a six-hour training course on the fundamentals of guardianship.

These courses are being offered free of charge by the Supreme Court of Ohio's Judicial College. All guardians appointed prior to June 1 have one year to complete the introductory training. Guardians appointed after June 1 have six months to complete their training.

Congratulations, graduates!!

Both the Bobbie B. Fairfax and Margaret B. Rost schools had their graduations last month.

Staff Spotlight

Earlier this year, two agency employees moved into new positions. Nathan Beck is the new Employment Coordinator. Beck is focused on adults and will talk to local businesses about the benefits of hiring someone with a disability. Lisa Grady is the new Transition Supervisor, heading the team focused on students as they move out of high school and into adulthood.

Beck was formerly the assistant director at Kidd and Beckman. He came to Hamliton County DD Services from Preble County, where he was the adult services director.

Grady has been with the agency for nearly 30 years and was previously a transition consultant. She also was the coordinator for Bridges to Transition, a vocational rehabilitation partnership between county boards and the state of Ohio.

Learn more about Beck and Grady and their new roles in this story.

Adult Center Managers

Congratulations to the new Adult Center Managers! (From left) Tom Ciulla, Beckman; Mollie Jimmar, Franks; Sylvia Smith, Jackson; Wes Birkhold, Kidd.

The manager role replaces the director and assistant director position at each adult center.

Our commercials are now airing on Channel 12 WKRC. There are four commercials in rotation, one from us and each of our neighboring counties: Butler, Clermont, and Warren.

The commercials feature a person with a disability who has a job in the community. Ours features Andy Schwertman, who was on our billboards during March.

Each county is also filming brief segments about community employment that will air during a Star 64 movie marathon. We'll share more details about when it will air on Facebook.

Turning your passion into a business

When Caroline Cameron is on bike rides with her family, people want to know what she's riding. Cameron, who has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair, has a specialized bike - one where she pedals and someone else can steer and brake.

"My family does walking races and I wanted to participate, too, because I love to exercise. My mom and dad helped me get an adapted bike and I started biking in my neighborhood," she said.

"A lot of people would stop to ask where I got my bike because it was something they'd never seen before, and they knew others who could use one."

Now she's turned her passion into a business called Rise Adaptive Cyclery. Cameron partners with Wheel Fun Rentals at Sawyer Point to rent two different styles of specialized bikes to the public.

Rise Adaptive Cyclery held its grand opening earlier this month. Read more about Caroline and her business on our blog
