A Greater Madison Vision and United Way of Dane County Discuss the Future
Capital Area RPC staff and leaders and members of the United Way of Dane County’s Vision Council, Community Solutions and Capacity Building Teams recently came together to envision the future in the greater Madison region. Sixty five United Way volunteers engaged in a productive discussion about the impacts of some of the most significant trends and forces shaping life in the region over the next 20 to 30 years, as well as how the region as a whole can respond to those changes. Many thanks to the staff and Vision Council at United Way for hosting!

The United Way focuses its efforts on three priority areas: education, income, and health. The goals and initiatives that address these priority areas comprise the United Way’s “Agenda for Change.” This work involves more than a half-dozen community solutions teams and other leadership groups, and it typically focuses on a timeline of five years. The Greater Madison Vision steering committee imagines and evaluates future changes and decisions through the year 2050. A gathering of these United Way leaders, therefore, presented a unique opportunity to tap into the perspectives and expertise of people already working to address regional challenges on a shorter time scale. The lively discussions, facilitated by CARPC and United Way staff, benefited both groups!
