News From Around the Region
Stay up to date with our roundup of planning and development news around the region.

CARPC Launches New GIS Open Data Site
The Capital Area Regional Planning Commission’s mission is to facilitate the creation of a shared vision and regional plan with our communities and to support communities in making vital decisions that strengthen our region. Working towards that mission, CARPC has officially launched a new GIS open data site , which initially features datasets for Environmental Corridors and Sewer Service Areas. This change to an open data portal will enable CARPC to provide timely, accessible, and relevant GIS data to promote informed decision-making, improve services to communities, and encourage collaboration in planning. The new open data site provides enhanced options for accessing, exploring, and downloading datasets in several formats including: CSV, KML, ArcGIS Shapefile, and JSON. The data is available free of charge. Making these datasets widely available benefits both the private and public sectors by reducing the time involved in obtaining the data and providing users with the most accurate, up-to-date, information available for their use. Look for more GIS data to be added in the future.
CARPC Transitions to Tableau: Housing Construction in Dane County
Along with the new GIS open data site, CARPC staff is also transitioning data offerings to interactive dashboards and story maps with the use of Tableau. In the past we have offered building permits data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s “State of the Cities Data System” (SOCDS).

Going forward, we hope to offer these same data in more engaging and interactive formats. Click below to find our first data story featuring examination of Housing Construction in Dane County .

Youth Incentive Program
A Greater Madison Vision invites schools and nonprofits serving youth to participate in the Survey Incentive Program by encouraging their supporters, members, program participants, and other interested individuals to take the A Greater Madison Vision survey between September 12 and November 12, 2018. A Greater Madison Vision will gather public input for the next regional development plan. This plan will help determine growth and development in the Greater Madison region through 2040.
