2018 Dane County Urban Water Quality Grant Program
Applications are currently being accepted for Dane County’s Urban Water Quality Grant Program. This year, Dane County will be distributing $1.3 million in matching grants to municipalities for projects focused on best management practices for improving and retrofitting urban stormwater controls. Initial applications are due April 30, 2018.
Previously funded projects have included bioretention and detentions ponds designed to remove sediment and phosphorus from urban stormwater.
This retention pond near Madison’s Cherokee Marsh-South Unit is one example of a water quality project supported by Dane County’s Urban Water Quality Grant Program. The project was designed to treat runoff from a 170 acre existing residential neighborhood and reduce levels of sediment and phosphorus by 50% compared to the previously untreated stormwater.
Specific stormwater outfalls known to contribute large pollutant discharges to area waterways are eligible for up to 75% cost-sharing. Other projects are eligible for 50% cost-sharing, up to $100,000. The program announcement provides more information and the project selection criteria. Projects need to be constructed and functional by the end of 2019. Since 2005, the county has provided almost $10 million through this program, for projects focused on improving stormwater management practices in existing developed areas, helping to reduce the amount of pollutants reaching our aquatic ecosystems and improve overall water quality. "
National Study Shows Suburban and Rural Growth Rising! What About the Greater Madison Region?
Following the great recession metro regions grew faster while suburban and rural areas declined or grew more slowly. A recent study of newly released census data by the Brookings Institution showed that growth patterns are returning to pre-recession trends: more growth in suburbs, exurbs and rural areas. With one difference: more growth in “middle of the country” metros.
