The Book Smugglers: Poets, Partisans, and the Race to Save Jewish Treasues from the Nazis  האָט געוווּנען די נאַציאָנאַלע ביכער־פּרעמיע פֿאַר אַ ווערק וועגן דער חורבן־טעמאַטיק. י

In the twentieth century the city of Vilna received the nickname "Jerusalem of Yiddish." The seminar will begin with an analytical appraisal of Vilna as a center of Yiddish culture between the two world wars. After that, we will focus on the rescue work of the "Paper Brigade" in hiding Jewish cultural treasures from the Germans. Finally, we will consider the equally heroic deeds of the surviving members of the Brigade after the war, in terms of unearthing the treasures and smuggling them out of the Soviet Union to the free world.

The seminar will make use of Yiddish primary sources (Herman Kruk's diary, Avrom Sutzkever's and Shmerke Kaczerginski's books about the Vilna Ghetto, among others), and will consider the "Paper Brigade" in the broader context of the Vilna Ghetto and Soviet power in Vilna after the war.
