Douglas David Oil Painting Workshop
Experience hands on the classic principles of painting. Each day Douglas will give a short demonstration with discussions on composition, massing, building form, light and shadow, depth, atmospheric images and how to know when your piece is finished. You'll study these principles of design and paint while creating a landscape or seascape painting, working in your own style. Most importantly, you'll have class time to put paint to canvas, ask questions, and get one-on-one feedback on your oil painting practice.

10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. lunch breaks * $325
About Douglas David
Douglas David has painted his way across the country, capturing the beauty and spirit of the things he loves -- tranquil country landscapes, sunrises and sunsets on his favorite beaches, a simple pitcher of spring lilacs or peonies, a lemon, lime or a slice of watermelon on a checked tablecloth. Paintings that reflect comfort, warmth meaning and simplicity: similar to everything important to him -- his close knit family, life-long friendships, creatively fulfilling work and giving his best. A recipient of numerous regional and national awards and honors, Douglas' teaching is a way of giving back and sharing some of his journey with those who choose to study with him. The Human Canvas
Armstrong Gallery
May 16-30
Since around five thousand BC, humans have been toying with the most permanent form of self-expression - tattoos. They hold a place on nearly every surface of the globe, embedded in different cultures, and rich with varying perspectives. Sammi Frankhouse and Ella Rocker, seniors at Black River Public School, decided to delve deep into this trend. Their exhibit offers extensive research on tattoos; specifically, the history of tattoos, the role they play in different cultures, the science behind this permanent form of art, and how they are perceived socially.
In addition to their research, the students will display the results of a social experiment they have been conducting over the past month and a half. The Human Canvas
will deliver a unique perspective on what is beneath the surface of tattoos, as well as the people they are displayed on.

Bette DelVecchio
worked as a bank loan officer to pay the bills, but hoped to find an outlet to feed her eclectic soul. After a varied career that spanned the steel industry, single motherhood, real estate and banking, Bette began searching for a medium of expression that harkened back to her days in the artistic areas of Pennsylvania where she grew up. She spotted her vision in a lump of clay after moving to the shores of Lake Michigan. Soon she was working to hone her craft as a potter. Several years ago, Bette began to explore the wonderful world of acrylic painting.
Daryl Bruischat studied printmaking and sculpture as a graduate student with Takashi Takahara. He has traveled the world extensively, mostly for his work designing and engineering environmental chambers. After a horrific accident left him fighting for life, he has turned his attention to art. He traces his mobility and current health on the physical and spiritual healing qualities of art. Bruischat's sculptural work is created from heating and cooling variously shaped copper pieces in a series of rapid movements, then assembling the various brilliant colored pieces into works that gather the eye then the mind around the abstract composition.
Their contrasting backgrounds and varied methods of creating blend in this short exhibition -- not one to miss!
