The RCC Team Goes to Suriname
|
|
In June of this year, members of the Reliable Controls team headed out to a project in East Suriname. This was the first time we’d completed work in Suriname; it’s always nice to have the opportunity to expand our global partnerships! For this project, RCC worked on a gold deposit north of the Nassau Mountains to provide on-site personnel to inspect, witness and verify the Commercial Production 30 Day Test Run which took place in September. During the Commercial Production 30 Day Test Run, three key parameters had to be monitored:
- Throughput: determined by the calculated tonnage from the flowmeter and density gauge on the pre-leach thickener underflow feed to leach.
- Availability: determined by the measure of mill operating time, logged by the mill hours; operating typically reported on a shift and daily basis.
- Recovery: determined by sampling of the leach feed for gold content, pregnant and barren solution [Au] in the ILR electro-winning circuit, final tailings assay, gold on carbon inventory and gold poured.
RCC sent down a team of two engineers and two metallurgists and used the AMIRA-P754 gold accounting standard practices to validate the Commercial Production run. The team observed all plant operations to visually verify the plant performance; daily key performance metrics were downloaded from the facility control system which the team used to calculate the plant throughput and availability. All plant assays were analyzed to verify the gold recovery. While on-site, the RCC personnel also assisted with sampling procedures and equipment calibrations. The Reliable Controls Team prepared weekly reports on their inspections and test findings, as well as an analysis of material deviations and proposed actions to rectify such deviations. The end deliverable was a “Commissioning Tests and Commercial Production Test Run Report” that included all test and inspection results and key findings. The reports also included an overall assessment of how the commissioning tests and Commercial Production Run were performed, what was accomplished and what follow-up was needed.

This month we’d like to introduce you to John Moody, an RCC Commissioning Engineer! John joined the Reliable Controls team in July of 2014 and brought with him a Master’s in Electrical Engineering from BYU, an MBA from the University of Utah and 12 years of work experience at a chemical weapons facility.
After 3 years as a controls engineer and 9 years as a risk manager, John wanted to switch things up! He knew he wanted to travel more, so jumped at an opportunity to work with Reliable Controls Corporation…and we are sure glad he did! John told us that his favorite part about working for RCC is the variety. “With any job, you get bored doing the same thing over and over,” he said, “but here, you never get to that monotonous point.”
When asked if he would recommend RCC to young engineers, he wholeheartedly said he would because of the hands-on experiences, he explained, “You can really become a versatile engineer in a very short period of time.” He expanded that his biggest strength as an individual is versatility, which is probably why he’s done so well with our company! Having the ability to take on many roles and wear multiple hats is an important attribute when working at a small company; John has definitely done well in taking on that role for us.
Outside of work, John spends time with his girlfriend, Anna, and his sister, Tricia, who both live in Salt Lake City. His parents are still in Louisiana, where he is originally from. John also likes to spend his free-time exercising; he did an Iron Man last year, a marathon the year before and is actually a certified running coach.
We asked John to tell us a fun fact about himself, something that little people know, and were surprised to find out that he used to be an announcer for the Wasatch Roller Derby league!
We struggled to find out what inspires John, but were able to uncover that if he had to eat one meal for the rest of his life, that meal would be Chicken and Sausage Gumbo. Even though we couldn’t find out what inspires him, we asked John to inspire us with some words of wisdom, and he gave us some pretty good words to live by:
“Life can change at any moment, so take advantage of the opportunities you have now.”
Thanks for sharing with us, John, and letting us take advantage of the opportunity to get to know you!

Make a Donation to the Christmas Box International!
|
|
Reliable Controls gives back! It’s our turn to show our appreciation for the community that has already given so much to us. As part of our annual Christmas festivities, Reliable Controls Corporation is hosting a fundraiser, with 100% of proceeds going toward a local non-profit organization.
The Christmas Box House was founded in 1996 by Richard Paul Evans, with the motto “every child deserves a childhood.” Evans, a
New York Times best-selling author, wanted to create a place where Utah’s children felt safe, and named that place after his very first novel,
The Christmas Box. Reliable Controls Corporation is inspired by the work and efforts of this organization, which is why we have again chosen them to receive our annual Christmas donation. We hope the donation will help The Christmas Box International continue to do wonderful things in our community.
Since its founding in 1996, The Christmas Box House has grown with great success. In 2015, they served 7,551 children and teens who were victims of abuse, neglect and abandonment, and annually average helping more than 6,000 children locally, nationally and internationally through their programs.
The organization provides clothing, books, toys, school supplies, dental care and holiday activities and gifts to 1,400 children, ages 0 to 18, at three local Christmas Box House emergency children’s shelters in Ogden, Salt Lake City and Moab. Their efforts also extend to another 6,100 at-risk children in other Utah communities and even to other countries through community based Christmas Box Resource Rooms.
At this time, Reliable Controls Corporation has raised over $6,000 for the Christmas Box International, and we still hope to increase that number significantly! We will be accepting donations all the way up until our Annual Christmas Party on December 3rd, 2016. If you would like to make a donation to the Christmas Box International, please contact Brittany McDermott at
[email protected] for additional details. Thanks to all of those who have already donated to this wonderful organization!

MSHA Safety Training
This month, the RCC team participated in an annual refresher for their
MSHA 5000-23 Certificate of Training. MSHA safety training plays a fundamental role in preventing injuries and fatalities on the job site.
The MSHA training is required for anyone working at a mine site, and Reliable Controls Corporation requires all employees, regardless of position or location, to complete this training to gain a better understanding of how to recognize and report potential hazards, and become more aware of health and safety.
At Reliable Controls Corporation, we’ve developed a culture built on safety. We understand that the people of this industry are constantly placed in potentially dangerous and hazardous situations where proper training and preventative measures are absolutely necessary to avoid accidents or injuries.
|
|
The refresher training was interactive and consisted of specific examples from the field where better training and awareness could have not only prevented injuries, but in many cases, fatalities. The RCC team contributed with feedback on times their own MSHA training proved beneficial and effective on the job site, or in every day life.
Team members who participated in this round of training varied from upper administration, accounting, marketing and engineering staff. As with any RCC team gathering, engaging and challenging conversation rounded the room and everyone left feeling refreshed and ready to carry our safety culture on to the next project.
