October 9, 9:30 and 11:15am

The Story of Place
Rev. Justin Schroeder, Senior Minister

We are in the middle of the Jewish High Holy Days, with Rosh Hashanah behind us, and Yom Kippur just in front of us. Yom Kippur is a time of repentance and atonement, of making amends with those we have hurt. How might our understanding of this Holy Day and this practice deepen, as we seek to understand the place and the land we live on, as it relates to an indigenous population?

If you are a Classroom Volunteer, you will be in a classroom 10 Sundays between September and October. Please make sure you've signed up for about one Sunday each month.  Religious Education just can't happen without all of us sharing the work and the joy of "doing church" with our kids.

Are you unsure of what you'll be doing, how to sign up, or how to get on board? Never fear! You can find lots of information, links to session plans, and a place to sign up for your Sundays on the Volunteer Resources page of our website. The password to view session plans is "peace."
Focus Groups in October
Help shape the future of First Universalist Church!

Dear Families,

You're invited to help shape the future of First Universalist Church!  Beginning on Sunday, October 9, and running through the end of October, we will hold more than a dozen Focus Groups, laying out some of the urgent needs we face as a church, and sharing a vision for how we might address those needs.

You may recall that at our Annual Meeting in June, we spoke about a comprehensive stewardship campaign as a way to move forward, address some of these needs, and truly make 3400 Dupont our home. The Board of Trustees and the Senior Ministry Team agree: now is the time to dream about how we can best achieve the future that our Strategic Plan calls us into!

We need you! In these 45 minute long Focus Groups, we hope to hear from every person in this congregation. We want you, grounded in a shared love of our faith community, to help us create the strongest vision possible for our church as we seek to address these urgent needs.

We especially need parents and youth to add their voices to the vision. First Universalist is home to one of the largest UU Religious Education programs in the world. Help ensure we build a future together that continues to put the spiritual needs of children, youth and families at the center.

Childcare is available for most Focus Groups if requested at least 7 days in advance. See the full schedule of groups on our church website, and get one on your calendar today.

Young Families Halloween Party
Saturday, October 30, 9-11am
Come celebrate Halloween and autumn with the littlest members of our church community. All families with children up through 1st grade are invited to attend. Older siblings are welcome, too. We will play together, do Halloween crafts, and march in a Halloween costume parade. Enjoy crispy apples, bagels, buttery popcorn and hot cider. This is a wonderful way to connect with other families with young children, while kids make memories and deepen their ties to their church community. Don't miss it! Sign up here.

Child Dedication Ritual
Sunday, November 6
During the Child Dedication ritual, the congregation pledges itself to partner with and support parents and families in the religious upbringing of the child. Infants and children of members and those on the path to membership at First Universalist Church may be dedicated.

Child Dedications take place during Sunday worship services twice a year, in May and November. The next Child Dedication will take place on Sunday, November 6. Please sign up by October 30.

2016-2017 Religious Education Registration Open
Children, youth and families are at the heart of the ministry of First Universalist, and our Religious Education program for children and youth is one of the largest among bricks and mortar UU churches worldwide. We continue to align Religious Education with the values and mission of the larger church so that children and youth are actively engaged in a spiritual journey with the whole congregation. E ach class offers a variety of activities  on Sunday  mornings, including stories, singing, sharing joys and concerns, spiritual practices such as prayer and meditation, games, crafts and hands-on projects.

for the 2016-2017 church year. Read through the class descriptions for each age/grade level and find the registration form on our Religious Education website. Please keep in mind that some classes are now full, and bring a spirit of flexibility. We will find a spot for every family at one of the two service times. The safety of our kids, the capacity of our volunteer staff, and the quality of the church experience for everyone informs our enrollment policies.
