Join us in the continuing partnership to end extreme poverty
The 2013 Partnerships against Poverty Summit opened with calls from World Bank President Dr. Jim Yong Kim and Ministers from the Philippines and Indonesia for microfinance to be part of the movement that helps bring an end to extreme poverty in the world by 2030. And, it concluded with adoption of the "Partnerships against Poverty Summit Declaration," which states the following:
We as the Partnerships against Poverty Summit participants, declare, collectively and enthusiastically, THAT EXTREME POVERTY CAN AND WILL BE ENDED BY THE YEAR 2030.

the Independence of Grameen Bank

Larry Reed calls on delegates to endorse the statement of support for Grameen Bank at the 2013 Summit.
|
In response to these takeover attempts, Microcredit Summit Campaign Director Larry Reed told the delegates, "This move would undermine Grameen Bank's longtime success, disenfranchise the women who own a majority of the shares and by virtue of that a majority of its board seats, and the independence of civil society throughout the country and microfinance institutions around the world."
Mila Mercado-Bunker, president of the Board of Trustees of the Microfinance Council of the Philippines, Inc., welcomed the declaration, stating, "The attempts to take over Grameen Bank are a threat to all microfinance institutions... By adopting this declaration, the 2013 Microcredit Summit delegates have made a powerful statement about our collective support for Grameen Bank's independence and our continued vigilance of the situation."
