About 25 people participated in the Sheff Movement's "National Day of Racial Healing" event, which we co-hosted with Toivo on January 17th. Find out what other folks across the country did that day, and learn more about the initiative, led by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Toivo will host a Mindfulness and Social Justice Potluck on Sunday, January 29th from 4PM-6PM in partnership with the Anti-Division League.

Join us at 10AM this Saturday, January 28th at our offices (75 Charter Oak Avenue, Building One) , as we continue to build on the great discussions and ideas that came out of the #improvesheff Design Challenge! Don't forget to evaluate the event if you haven't already.

At this meeting:

• Brainstorm concrete solutions to some of main needs we've identified, both during and since the design challenge
• Prototype our ideas for solutions into real-world projects
• Learn about our post-design challenge timeline and discuss next steps for choosing which projects we'll focus on in 2017

• Receive updates about Sheff settlement negotiations and staff work plan
• Discuss 2017 advocacy strategy and priorities
• Provide input to help strengthen SMC's communications efforts
• Hear about SMC's current fundraising efforts

Award-winning  New York Times journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones spoke to NPR's Terry Gross about ongoing systemic school segregation, American resistance to desegregating schools and housing, and the personal decision she  made when choosing a school for her own daughter.

"It is important to understand that the inequality we see, school segregation, is both structural, it is systemic, but it's also upheld by individual choices," she says. "As long as individual parents continue to make choices that only benefit their own children ... we're not going to see a change."
