Explore our Collections!
Dive into history...
The Hoboken Historical Museum's collections hold over 50,000 documents, maps, drawings, books, photos, slides and objects related to the history of our city. The museum has been collecting since it was founded in 1986; formal accessioning and cataloging began in 2001. Since 2006, the Museum has offered an online version of its collections catalog.

Objects range from the very small -- a Holland America Line cocktail pick -- to the very large -- the twelve-foot-high "Last Drop" that was part of the world-famous Maxwell House Coffee "Good to the Last Drop" neon sign that graced our waterfront from 1938 to about 1993.

Sinatra exhibit poster

Sinatra was, as writer Bruce Bliven put it, "a kid from Hoboken who got the breaks." He emerged from a blue-collar, working class, urban setting, where most guys, he once told an audience, became fighters or worked in factories. His own father, Martin, a recent immigrant from Sicily, started out as a boxer, fighting under the assumed name of Marty O'Brien to gain access to Irish-controlled gyms that wouldn't admit Italians. Learn more by visiting our website, or just drop by on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2 - 5 pm.

Hoboken-born author Elizabeth Vallone  will visit the Museum to read selected passages from her latest novel of historical fiction, "Heaven, Hell, and Hoboken," set in Hoboken in the turbulent days of World War I. The novel explores the impact of the war on the German-American and Italian-American families living in Hoboken at the time, when the US government seized the German-owned shipping piers and sent many local residents to internment camps on suspicion of spying. The war divided family loyalties and tested bonds of love across the ethnic divides. Click here for more.

Tomato Tasting Festival - August 23
It's back! Annual Heirloom Tomato-Tasting
Festival is Sunday, August 23, 1 - 5 p.m.
Sunday, August 23 * 1 - 5 p.m.
Location: The Museum, 1301 Hudson St.

Admission is free!

Tomato-Tasting Festival-Aug. 23
New Jersey farmers Rich and Sue Sisti of Catalpa Ridge Farm in rural Wantage Township are coming to Hoboken with over a dozen varieties of heirloom tomatoes, freshly picked and ready for sampling. The event, as always, is free.

Heirlooms are varieties that gardeners have saved by passing down seeds from one generation to the next. They're usually the most flavorful varieties and often come in unusual colors and shapes - they hardly resemble the typical round, red tomato sitting in a plastic tray in the supermarket. The colors range from white to yellow to purple, and sometimes even red. Favorites over the years have included the tart "Aunt Ruby's German Green," the flavorful "Brandywine Pink," and the ever-popular "Radiator Charlie's Mortgage Lifter." New varieties are brought down every year.

Garlic-lovers, mark your calendars for Oct. 13, when the Sistis return with heirloom varieties of "the stinking rose"!
