Our Roe v. Wade anniversary benefit events were huge successes, and we'd like to thank everyone who helped make them so special!

The 42nd anniversary of the legendary supreme court case has sparked some political and legislative activity meant to challenge legal abortion. Stand with Women's Health Specialists as we fight to make reproductive justice a reality for all women.

Federal 20 Week Abortion Ban Dropped
Within a few days of being sworn-in, the new and more conservative Congress proposed a ban on abortions done after 20 weeks. This is in direct violation to the right awarded to women in Roe v. Wade. The plan was to vote on the bill on the anniversary of the case, a bold anti-woman statement. Many conservative women and moderates refused to support the bill due to the rape exception requiring rape victims to report the incident to the police. Anti-abortion extremists are not happy about the bill being dropped, as evidenced in a recent Cosmopolitan article.

No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act
We've been trying to fight the Hyde Amendment, which is attached to annual appropriations bills by Congress each year to prevent federal funding of abortion. Year after year, this amendment prevents millions of impoverished women from getting the procedures they need. This new proposed bill H.R.7, which already passed in the House on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade less than 2 weeks ago, would put the terrible practice of the Hyde Amendment into permanent law.
Representative Doug LaMalfa voted for this bill. Click here to see how your local representative voted.

Maximum Family Grant (SB 23)
Senator Holly Mitchell has reintroduced a bill that would repeal the maximum family grant rule. Under this rule, some infants are denied basic needs and medical coverage. SB 23 would keep the state out of the reproductive and medical decisions of women and families just because they are poor. For more from Senator Mitchell on the importance of repealing the maximum family grant rule, click here. To get involved, contact [email protected] or stay connected to WHS for updates!
Covered California
Open enrollment for Covered California ends February 15th, 2015 and we at WHS have been doing all we can to get the word out and inform folks in the community about their options.
No Referral Needed!
Many newly-enrolled women don't realize that they can get their gynecological services with us even though they have a new primary care or family physician. This includes Medi-Cal and most private insurance, and applies to people of all genders. Services offered at WHS include: all birth control methods, pregnancy testing, abortion, pap smears, STD/STI testing and treatment, breast and testicular cancer screenings, and well woman checks.
Paid Family Leave
WHS has been working with CA legislators like Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins to get the word out about Paid Family Leave, which many Californians aren't aware that they have access to. The program offers paid time off for workers who have a baby, adopt a foster child, or have to take care of a sick family member. More info at paidfamilyleave.org
