 OCTOBER SPOTLIGHT

HOW YOGA WORKS: MULADHARA CHAKRA

This month we continue our exploration of the chakra system, the subtle-body structure that determines how we see and experience the world around us. The Muladhara Chakra or Root Place is the seat of our dormant wisdom. By awakening this chakra we take the first step on our path toward a fully developed human consciousness. In the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, the instruction given about yoga asana (poses) is simple: Sthira Sukham Asanam--the connection to the Earth should be steady and joyful (YS 2:46). Sthira - strong, steady, stable; Sukham - comfortable, easeful, happy, light, relaxed; Asanam - asana, posture, connection to the Earth, seat.

The simple principle, "from stability comes freedom" can be applied to this sutra, and it is through the practice of standing poses that we start to become aware of our connection to the Earth, and through that, our connection to all living beings. Along with the breath, our connection to the Earth is perhaps the thing we take for granted the most. We don't need to remember to breathe, and gravity keeps us literally grounded. Through the practice of yoga asana and vinyasa, we take that which is unconscious and make it conscious--we take the first step toward turning off 'auto-pilot" and stepping all the way into an awareness of how every thought, word, and deed affects everything around us, and determines our experience in the world.

Next month, we'll explore the second chakra, Swadhisthana.

I look forward to seeing you on the mat, and here's to another great year together--Namaste!
~Nicole

ROOTS OF AWAKENING:
FROM STABILITY COMES FREEDOM
GROUNDING AND BALANCING WITH NICOLE NICHOLS
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 19TH 1:00 - 3:00PM

Muladhara chakra, or root place, is often disregarded as the "lowest" chakra, but in fact, it is the most important one. It is the very foundation of the energy body, and foundation is the most important part of any structure. In Hatha Yoga, we focus on this because with a steady foundation, it is easy to create the rest. This practice is all about balance, and when we are in a balanced state it is easy to support our life and uplift the lives of others. Without a steady foundation, daily life can be a quickly shifting landscape that is easily toppled, shaken, and prone to anxiety, depression, ups and downs.

Join Nicole--together we'll explore this chakra, through grounding and balancing poses to build strong roots for the rest of our practice and our daily lives--from stability comes freedom, and with freedom, anything is possible!

THE ART OF SEQUENCING
WITH
JENNIFER CAMPELL-OVERBEEKE
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25TH 1:00-6:00PM

Ever wonder how your favorite yoga teachers develop those inspiring classes that leave you feeling fantastic? Join Jennifer for this half-day intensive, and learn to create authentic and sound yoga sequences to foster meaningful progress for your students.

Hatha Yoga is an art form used to purify the nadis, balance the system, and open the student for more exploratory and unifying practices. From the seat of the teacher, it requires passion, curiosity, and confidence. In a world where information (some sound and some questionable) is at our fingertips, it can be a slippery slope when it comes to integrating that information into what we know to be true about the practice from our own experience. The question is, how do we create an EXPERIENCE for our students that is based upon intelligent and embodied information rather than the
latest youtube video?

In this workshop we will review and expand upon the basic elements of a yoga practice and use them to create safe, sustainable and inspiring sequences that feel authentic and unique. Open to teachers of all disciplines. Early registration advised--space is limited.
