Delaware Street Pier,
City of New Castle, Delaware

Fence & Deck Connection was chosen to help restore a popular landmark destroyed by Superstorm Sandy in 2012

The City of New Castle Delaware wanted to rebuild a 170 foot pier at the foot of Delaware Street and historic Battery Park, replacing the popular landmark destroyed in October 2012 by Superstorm Sandy. The experienced contracting firm of Dissen and Juhn won the bid for the project, and reached out to Fence & Deck Connection for our known abilities to come up with unique solutions to uncommon projects.

Dissen and Juhn commissioned Fence & Deck Connection to supply and install the railing needed for the pier restoration project.  The proposal called for over 550 linear feet of railing around the perimeter of the pier to keep residents and visitors safe while giving them full access to walk and utilize the pier.  Alumi-Guard aluminum railing was chosen for their selection of low maintenance, powder coated aluminum products, which work well in this type of environment - withstanding the harshest of conditions and surpassing the 10,000 Hours Salt Spray Test.  Alumi-Guard also offers a Limited Lifetime Warranty, so it was the clear choice to use with this design and location. Fence & Deck Connection installed 42" high Alumi-Guard Commercial Grade 3-Rail Ascot black aluminum with standard bottom railing/fence.

The pier also has a dock at the end of it and provides an opportunity for the Kalmar Nyckel, a replica of a 1600s Swedish merchant ship based in Wilmington, and perhaps other tall ships, to dock.  To accommodate these ships, we designed specialty railing that could be removed when ships came in to the landing pier. Custom aluminum saddle brackets were manufactured for railing panel removal, making room for gang planks at various locations along a 40 foot span of removable sections.
