Billings, MT-- Taking home first place at the Custer Ranch Rodeo June 24 was the Sand Creek Cattle team.
Just north of the town of Custer, Montana at the dusty arena nine teams competed for prizes and fun. The breeze kept the temperature down and the bugs away for the afternoon event.
The Ranch Rodeo started in traditional fashion with the national anthem performed by Tim Ferch and Christina Temple. After the teams were introduced the real action started with Wild Cow Milking. Chris Davis, Matlock Morrison, Star Whitt, and Greg Allred of the Circle B team won this event.
The next event was Team Branding, an event where two teams go at the same time and it's whoever can "brand" the most number of calves in two minutes. Sand Creek Cattle team won, made up of Clint Potts, Carrie Phipps, Jason Phipps, and Cedar Woodford.
After the dust settled and the panels were set, the ranch rodeo continued with Team Penning. The Rounders won with the fastest time of getting cattle gathered up, moved across the arena, and into a pen. Will Croft, Mackabe Severe, Garret Severe, and Gillian Severe are from Hardin and Melstone and make up team.
They exemplified excellent horsemanship and teamwork that also helped them win Doctoring. Two event wins put them in excellent position going into the final event--Trailer Racing.
It comes down to who can load and unload a trailer full of horses, and ride around the trailers. It's a timed event that comes down to the hundredth of a second. It can really shake up the standings. Winning the Trailer Race was S Ranch, comprised of KC Verhelst, Sarah Verhelst, Jacob Bremmen, and Guy Peterson.
After a cumulative total of the points from all the events the winners were announced. Coming in fourth place was Circle B. Third place went to S Ranch. The Rounders won second place and to win it all was Sand Creek Cattle.
Additional awards that were given were Top Cowgirl; Jessie Hahn (Montana Ranch Horse Association), Top Cowboy; Jay Blankenship (Fink Quarter Horses), Top Horse; ridden by Matlock Morrison (Circle B), Team Stockmanship; Trail Creek Land & Livestock.
The winning team from the
Custer Ranch Rodeo will compete at the Farstad Oil Ranch Rodeo Finals at the NILE Saturday, October 14 at 7 p.m. in Billings, Montana. The NILE is proud to have the Custer Ranch Rodeo as one of the sanctioning partners.
