This week's survey

(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

Last week's survey results...

How does a sign shop charge for graphics?
  • The software we have built has a 'start' and 'stop' button with notes. So every detail that has been done with the job can be accounted for to the minute and shown to the client if necessary. Has added dollars to our bottom line as there are no estimates or discrepancies for actual art time. (Reid, Juiceprint)
  • Quite easily actually. Why do many in this industry believe we cannot get paid for graphic design and concept work or that we do it for free. Graphic designers and marketing companies do not work for free so why should we!!!. We charge by the hour at a rate of $120.00 +GST. We advise our clients when quoting that our quote includes a portion for graphic design time. If a walk-in client requires a proof with a quote then we require a deposit before even beginning with graphic design to cover costs, then you find out if they are serious and you don't waste your valuable time. (Steve, Steve Baker Signs)
  • We show a charge for artwork design.
If customer supplied artwork, we have a charge for prepress.
  • Yes
  • Quote and then send an invoice for time spent.
(As a publishing practice to protect ourselves from any potential liability, company and individual names that are referred to negatively in any of these comments are removed.
In addition we reserve the right to remove comments that are blatant advertising for one product or company)

Smile: It's only Monday!

British scientists at Rolls Royce built a gun specifically to launch dead chickens at the windshields of airliners and military jets all travelling at maximum velocity.
The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields.
American engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the Windshields of their new high speed trains.
Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the American engineers.
When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the chicken hurled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the engineer's back-rest in two and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin like an arrow shot from a bow...
The horrified Yanks sent Rolls Royce the disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield and begged the British scientists for suggestions.

Rolls Royce responded with a one-line memo:
"Defrost the bloody chicken."
