This week's survey
(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

Last week's survey results...

Is it harder than it used to be to get all the information from a customer that you need to complete a job? ie. materials they want to use, wording, colours, logos etc?
  • 50/50. 20 years ago People used to say 'leave it up to you'. Now with computers most have done a design in MS Word to show me. Sometimes it is good, most times not so.
I set their design up and do a couple myself and give them the choice and explain the pros and cons and costs of a sign that is a 2 and a sign that is a 10. (Brett, Connelly Images)

  • Of course it is and people are expecting us to think more for them now. They don't even think of their own wording these days - it seems gone are the days with the pre-organise customer with at scribbled down rough draft of what they want and what they would like it to say. They are expecting more for less.
Educating the customer is the way I deal with it, communicating and asking as many questions as possible. Their heads may spin with information but the more they know to make their decision the easier thing get, esspecially if they become repeat customers.
  • Absolutely! Most calls I get start with 'How much does it cost to do this?'. I feel like responding with 'How much is a car?' but, I hold back and proceed to try to extract all the information I need from them. All the while hoping they don't get impatient with all my questions. And then after I give a price they often throw in another important detail that changes everything...DOH! Let's not forget the artwork aspect as well. Often provided with a jpeg the size of a postage stamp that they want enlarged to A3 size, which wasn't mentioned when asked if they had the artwork. (Shawn, Print to a T)
  • Yes it is. I think clients are often so fixated on telling me how to do my job, that they forget to tell me what the job is.
    Whatever happened to purchase orders...?
These days it can be like building up the set of instructions slowly, through a series of emails and phone calls and messages from other staff (who happened to pick up the phone that time) so that you finally get a sketchy rough idea of what the client wants. oh and don't forget thet critical size change that came through on a facebook message...
  • No it's most definitely not harder. It's often too easy! Years ago the vast majority of customers would leave it up to the professional sign writer to come up with layouts, designs etc. These days every ones an "expert". Some potential customers are highly offended if they are told the truth about the design/logo/layout that they have lovingly nurtured for 9 months. Don't dare tell them their "baby's" ugly, you could get hit in the head with a handbag!
