This week's survey
(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

Last week's survey results...

  • How long is a piece of string? Without any information about what you require the cost of you sign will be between $1.00 & $1,000,000.00. I always don't quote over the phone, I will try & get as much info as required Then email them a Quote. (Bernie, Geraldton GraFX).
  • I reply by asking How much is a car worth?.
As I am in a rural area I point out previous jobs around the place to them and about how much it would cost to give them a visual.
I put it into perspective for them by saying if it costs you $500 and you keep it 5 years it is only $100 per year.
  • I tell em that we are closed for quotes, only open for business. No seriously, I tell em that we need lots of details on the job before we can quote.
  • How much is a sign?" I'd like a quid for every time I've been asked that question over the last 35 years. I'd be retired by now. My usual answer to that question is, ..."the price can vary a bit from $1 to a million." Ask a silly question...! Regarding giving quotes for signs over the phone. I do that at times, under duress, but usually I ask them to come in to see me or I will meet them onsite. I'm very reluctant to give prices over the phone.
  • I arranged to have an app developed where I can enter the size, quantity, media, substrate, time estimate, ect. So now when I get those calls I calculate an indicative cost and tell the client then and there! Easy! (Yolinda, Almost Anything.com.au)
  • Quote a high square metre rate basically, and tell them I'll give them a definate price once they come in with their artwork.
  • Try not to give quotes over the phone (how long is a piece of string), better to get customer details, site visit if necessary and send out quote by email. Only give verbal quotes over the phone for items like corflutes , a-frames and pull-ups etc. These type of clients are usually ringing around but have picked up some good ones over the years.

(As a publishing practice to protect ourselves from any potential liability, company and individual names that are referred to negatively in any of these comments are removed.
