This week's survey

(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

Last week's survey results on the question of .....:
Would you expect a supplier to continue to supply the relevant inks and parts after the supplier discontinues with that product line but has installed several machines into the market?
  • Yes, if they expect us to continue to think they're worthwhile as a supplier. (Ian, Traditional Signs)
  • Yes, or at the very least inform you when they are not going to be supplying anymore and possibly suggest an alternative product. Very disappointing when they just cease to carry it any more with no warning and you are left high and dry...Have stopped using certain suppliers for just this reason.
  • Yes, there must be a minimum period of at least 5 years. After all, many firms purchase machinery on a 5 year lease, so any discontinuation of parts/consumables is absolutely not on within that 5 year time period. It is not feasible for manufacturers to continue supply indefinitely as there is an incredible amount of money tied up in this area. My thoughts are that supply should be continued for 7 years after the last machine is sold/installed
  • I think the product's manufacturer would have a thing or two to say about this happening and it presumably would be in the  local supplier's contract with the manufacturer.
  • I would assume that the product in question would be supplied by a different supplier, in which case there should be no problem. However in the case of the product not having any further availability in our country, I would certainly expect the supplier to maintain service, spares and associated consumables for a reasonable period.
  • I don't think any supplier would do this as their reputation would sink in the eyes of the industry and the company itself would possibly disappear.
  • Yes I believe the supplier MUST continue to service, maintain, and supply all parts, inks and consumables for some time.

HOME FOR CHRISTMAS
A man in Scotland calls his son in London the day before Christmas Eve and says, I hate to ruin your day but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough." 'Dad, what are you talking about?' the son screams.
"We can't stand the sight of each other any longer" the father says. "We're sick of each other and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Leeds and tell her."
Franticly, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. "Like hell they're getting divorced!" she shouts, "I'll take care of this!"
She calls Scotland immediately, and screams at her father "You are NOT getting divorced. Don't do a single thing until I get there. I'm calling my brother back, and we'll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don't do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?" and hangs up.
The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. 'Sorted! They're coming for Christmas - and they're paying their own way.
