Vol. V, Issue 13
April 7, 2015
 THE GOOD OLD DAYS
1945 Rule Book
Thanks to Jack Unbehaun for sharing some Field Trial history from the original rules that judges had to go by in the early 1930's.

"In judging a retriever's work, judges should give attention to the following points and take them as a whole throughout the entire performance rather than giving too much credit to a flashy bit of work. Points are listed in the order of importance.

A. Control at all times and under all conditions.
B. Aptitude in marking fall of game.
C. General intelligence and bird sense shown throughout work.
D. ... Ability and willingness to take hand signals.
E. Proof of tender mouth
F. Style and promptness of retrieving and delivery"

Jack adds that:
  • The importance of following a cripple was first published in 1936, and it still continues in every update, including the current rule book. There was a time when judges allowed dogs to hunt 15 minutes or longer on a cripple. Now judges just call a "no bird."
  • In 1936 they were still running only marks, blinds did not come until 1937.
  • Later in 1937 the AKC Gazette published that judges should penalize dogs for excessive handling on marks.
  • The following should be taken in the entirety, as originally intended: Accurate marking is of primary importance. A dog which marks the fall of a bird, uses the wind, follows a strong cripple, and will take direction from his handler is of great value.
HEARTWORM FACTS
The American Heartworm Society has a terrific website that is full of information about heartworm incidence, risk, and treatment.

Where once many only administered preventative during the warm months, heartworm season is year-round.

Here are some useful facts from the site:
  • On average 7 out of 10 mosquitoes in a heartworm-positive dog's kennel carry heartworm.
  • A heartworm-positive dog in the neighborhood substantially increases the risk of infection to healthy dogs.
  • It takes approximately 6 months after being bitten by an infected mosquito for a dog to test positive for heartworms.
  • Heartworm treatment can cost more than 15x that of a year of preventative.
  • There are 22 different mosquito species in the US that carry heartworm and they are active at different times of the day and year.
  • 75% of vets surveyed diagnosed heartworm in 2013.

You can read more here.

MORE EARLY DAYS
1925 - The Duchess of York
The Canine Chronicle website has published an article on the beginnings of Field Trials.

It's long, but worth a read. We think you'll see that some aspects of the sport haven't changed much!

You can read it here.
PUTTING ON AN EVENT
On the Retriever Results Facebook page, we repost the comments of those who say "thanks" to the generally unsung heroes of a weekend event. Of course saying "thank you" in person is even better.
We salute those who:
  • Throw, shoot, bag, carry birds and hang them at night
  • Arrange for lunches, ribbons, awards and lodging
  • Give up their time away from home to design and judge challenging tests
  • Volunteer to help even though they are running the event
  • Organize equipment and get it to where it needs to be, when it needs to be there
  • Work with landowners to secure and protect venues and tour them after the event has concluded to be sure property is left in the same state as it was before the event.
NEW THIS WEEK
Retriever Results has been updated to include events that took place on April 17-19, 2015.

See the complete list of those who finished last week. Visit www.retrieverresults.com for more information.
