Rev. Chuck's Weekly Email - Sunday July 23, 2017

We once called these the "Dog Days" of summer. I know not the origin of this nomenclature. Someone mused that it has to do with the heat and humidity which drove dogs to find shade and sleep until it cooled. Perhaps you know another source. Remember to stay hydrated. Six to eight glasses of water a day. Seems like a lot but H2O is a key to keeping us cool. Remember, both the parlor and sanctuary are air conditioned and most agreeable for Sunday worship.

Speaking of worship, Bill Jones poses the question for consideration this week. He wonders about the petition in the Lord's prayer having to do with temptation. Would God lead us into temptation purposefully, as though He is interested in whether we pass or fail? If not, why this request? If so, what does this say about God? The text is Matthew 6:9-15 and the title is "Lead Us Not Into Temptation?". Hymns include "Come thou Fount of Every Blessing", "I Need Thee Every Hour", and "Near the Cross". Trumpeter Colin Van Tuyle will offer the ministry of music at the sanctuary service. We have plenty of room in the parlor at 8:00 and the sanctuary at 10:00. Do welcome summer visitors and show forth the hospitality of FPC.

The session and trustees met this past week and dealt with issues before us. The trustees noted that we are behind in pledged contributions and other donations. Let's alleviate these concerns and remain current in our gifts. The session considered an array of issues, not the least of which is the importance of clear communication as key to the vitality of this congregation. To that end there will be a letter to the entire congregation summarizing where things stand as we close one chapter in our history and prepare the next. Watch for it in your email or in hard copy.

As always, speak to me or any member of session if you have ideas for how we can be the best possible congregation. I am available Tuesday through Friday mornings and other times by appointment. Drop ins are welcome.

What is your pastor reading? Currently I am revisiting a text entitled The Greatest Prayer: Rediscovering the Revolutionary Message of the Lord's Prayer by John Dominic Crossan. It is particularly relevant to this week's sermon. I am also enjoying a book by Richard Lischer, professor emeritus of Duke Divinity School, called Reading the Parables. This is in preparation for an adult class on the parables this fall. What are you reading that contributes to your imagination, your faith in God, or your joy?

Vacation Bible School is almost here (7/31-8/4). Children and youth bring wonderful gifts to our life and ministry. Rejoice in the vibe created by VBS this year. Adults, support this ministry of outreach and nurture with your prayers and gifts.

Prayer Concerns include Rebecca Davis, niece of Keith and Anne who was seriously injured in an auto accident, and the family of Jean Lanier, chairman of the Board of L'Arche Long Island, a minitstry to and with persons with special gifts. Jean died of cancer. His service will be Monday at 10:00 at St Lukes Episcopal Church in East Hampton.

Prayer of the Day. Eternal God, our beginning and our end, be our starting point and our haven and accompany us in this day's journey. Use our hands to do the work of your creation, and use our lives to bring others the new life you give this world in Jesus Christ, Redeemer of all. In the name of Him who teaches us to pray, saying....Our Father....

                  See you in church!
