Meet Your PRSA Board Members
Elizabeth Giles currently serves as the Student Relations Chair on your Greater Spokane PRSA Board of Directors.  She works as the Media Relations Liaison at Numerica Credit Union and tells the stories of the $1.8 billion dollar credit union focused on enhancing lives, fulfilling dreams and building communities. Elizabeth has more than fourteen years of experience working with different organizations in the realms of communication, marketing, and branding. Elizabeth graduated with her degree in Business Administration, focusing on communication and marketing, from Gonzaga University in 2004.

Why did you join PRSA?
I joined PRSA to get to know and network with more individuals. PR is constantly evolving and to be able to have a group of individuals who were experts in their field and to be able to collaborate with was very appealing to me.

Why did you choose your profession?

At my very core, I am a story teller. It is a skill that is able to transcend industries. Whether through writing or video, I have the potential to help tell a person’s experiences and help to inspire others. Stories can be as complex or as simple as the topic, but their nature is to help inform. I am lucky to be able to be a part of that process.

What are your hobbies?

When I have down time, I RELAX. I love hanging out with my wonderful husband, Keith. We are big foodies and so I love seeing what new culinary delights have come to town. I am also pretty crafty and so I look to challenge myself on my latest Pinterest finds.

Who is your hero?

My mom. She raised my twin and I as a single parent and always helped feed our ambitions and helped us strive to be our best selves. She instilled a hard work ethic in us while still being compassionate to those around you.

What was your dream job growing up?

For most of my life I wanted to be a pediatrician. Having a passion for helping others combined with a fascination of science and medicine, made being a doctor my number one dream. One of my earliest memories was my sister bringing her baby dolls to “Doctor Elizabeth” for check-ups. After a year in college on the Bio/Pre-Med track, I discovered my passion for marketing and communication. I realized that there are many ways to be able to help others and have since put my talents to use for the betterment of our community.

High Fives
This might be just the athletic culture I grew up in and lived through college, but really, who doesn't like high-fives? I think there needs to be more high-fives in the professional world and I make it a point to give the highest of fives at every opportunity. I’ve even been known to throw out a “Go Team!” at the end of a weekly department meeting. Not only is it a great closing cue for the meeting, but it usually sends people off with a little more pep in their step.

In fact, it has even been officially studied. UC Berkeley Psychology Professor Dacher Keltner studied NBA teams and found that high-fives actually help teams win. Watch him explain his research here.  Your professional community is not an exception to this.  The amount of physical contact a person gets from the communities in which they belong makes a real impact on the success of the community.

With that in mind, Greater Spokane PRSA has officially opened up the call for nominations for its annual professional awards, providing a more formal way to give your peers the permanent manifestation of a professional high-five! It’s a high-five that they can put on their shelf and get motivation from every day. You can even give yourself a self-five and submit your own nomination for public relations work completed in the last year.   Check out the categories and nominate someone you know today!

I look forward to seeing you at our Awards Breakfast at Barrister Winery on November 4 where together we will recognize and honor the outstanding talent we have right here in the Inland Northwest. I’m sure high-fives will be involved!
