Mark your Calendars (again!)
The RTC AGM has been rescheduled for June 22 beginning at 7:00pm. The decision to postpone was made given how well the Ottawa Senators were playing in the NHL Stanley Cup Playoff's and we certainly knew it would be hard to compete on game night and bring members out!
Attend! Participate! Ask questions and provide input to help identify actions and priorities and shape a working agenda for 2017-2018.
The Members' Council Needs YOU
Consider nominating yourself or friend. All RTC LifeFIT and Tennis members are eligible for nomination.
Nomination forms are available at the front desk and signatures are required from two members who support the nomination.
All Outdoor Courts are Now Open... Phew!
We apologize that outdoor courts were not open on time, nor all at the same time. Spring weather proved extra difficult with the very wet conditions that left outdoor sport fields delayed in opening and some summer tennis clubs delayed and/or closed intermittently. Our courts were saturated and there were concerns around stabilization and preventing soil movement or damage to the courts before resurfacing them.
In addition, we were challenged by a lengthy delay in the delivery of the seasonal har-tru product from the supplier. Club personnel pitched in to mitigate the delay and we appreciate your patience. In order to maximize your playing opportunity this spring, the domes have been left in place allowing for play, rain or shine.
Decking Out with Red and White to Celebrate Canada 150
RTC Members and friends planted red and white annuals in planters and along the front walk on Tuesday May 23 and Wednesday May 24 to celebrate Canada 150.
The efforts made by volunteers last fall in planting bulbs and adding mulch paid off and made the garden work very light this spring.
Special thanks to Claire Marchand who came equipped with her own tools and donated her afternoon. Douglas Mariano and Agata Nobrega joined us after work. Pilar Doe gave a hand with the containers after wrapping up the Rideau Reads! book sale. Marc Kempf dropped by to help water and clean up. Chuck Murphy donated a replacement hose nozzle. Gretchen Reynolds donated the three centrepiece dahlias featured on the front steps. Thanks to Justin for having all the pots, tools, soil and hose ready and waiting. Additional thanks to Heather Amys who is too modest to include her own volunteer support.
Rideau Reads! Is on for another week.
Find great books for $1 in the front desk area with more upstairs. Many thanks to our hard working volunteers who made this year's book sale a huge success: Cathy Ireland, Lorraine Revine, John Mertens, Pilar Doe, Ed Doe, Wynne White, Helen Eriks, Johanne Slater, Karen McDonald, Heather Amys, Noreen Towns and Zhenya Kondratovksy.
In addition RTC staff helped with the tables and on the stairs - Thanks Bruce, Jake, Jason, Chrissy and Brandon.
Rideau U12, U14, U18 Provincial Circuit - June 2 - 4
This upcoming tournament is oriented towards more competitive and experienced players looking to enter the ranks of the top 30 in Ontario. Tournament Play will take place in the Domes. Please note that member access to the Indoor courts will be very limited for the duration of the event.
Summer Online Court Booking - Live June 1
See what is available and book courts up to 7 days in advance. The system will even email you and your partner(s) to confirm your reservation. Our new system is also a great way to find a partner for a hit - just list your availability and level and search the directory for potential matches.
If you'd prefer to book on the phone or in person, you still can. Although we encourage you to give the system a try - we think you'll be impressed. If you'd like to know more, come see us at the front desk or read the online booking rules.
A huge "Shout Out" to Laurie Maybury who has provided essential project management for RTC to make online booking a reality. Laurie's expertise included research into different booking systems, different booking rules of tennis clubs, full configuration and testing, launch strategy, solving technical issues. We could not have done this without you!
Summer Booking Rules
All bookings are 60 minutes. Members may have 3 advance bookings in a 7-day period. In addition, a member may also book a walk-on in a rolling 1-hour period on the day of play. This rule means the member must book and play on the same day. When the walk-on expires, the member can book a court again that day, if courts are available.
Only members may book a court. Guests may play, if accompanied by a member. The first guest visit is free, after which, guests must pay the guest fee and may play up to an additional three (3) times.
The ball machine can only be booked for the Hard Courts 1, 4, 5 and 8.
Since it's our first summer with online booking, the club reserves the right to tweak these rules to ensure fair court availability for members.
Jazz Night at the Rideau
On May 26, Charley Gordon, Gerri Trimble, and Rob Martin provided great music to a room full of members, locals, and groupies gathered in the Breakpoint BIstro. Several people even found room to dance! Mark prepared good food and Liz provided great service. Pics speak a thousand words - thanks for them - John Mertens!
Interesting Tennis Tidbit!
The ATP to trial New Scoring System in Milan in November
The ATP will trial a new scoring system for the Men's 21 and under matches in Milan in November. New rules for a faster, cutting-edge game designed to attract younger players include the "sudden death" play at deuce, NO ADD SCORING.
The receiver can choose which box the server serves into. This is commonly used in social tournaments to avoid long games. For doubles the receiving team then has the choice which member will receive.
