A Message from Fr. Gary

Risen Indeed!

Dear Friends,
All Christians love Easter.  And it's not just the flowers.  Or the rousing hymns.  People come to church on Easter Sunday because they know that something remarkable happened that day that has somehow changed everything.  But what exactly did happen?  How are we supposed to make sense of those strange stories from the Gospels that we read on Easter Sunday?  Are we really expected to believe them at face value?  Or are they metaphorical or symbolic narratives that point to Jesus' continuing presence with those who believe in him?  Easter season is for 50 days to Pentecost, whereas, Christmas season is 12 days to Epiphany.
John Updike was one of the best writers of the 20th century.  His essays, reviews and short stories appeared regularly in the New Yorker Magazine for decades.  An urbane and sophisticated intellect, he could make a clear statement of his Christian faith without apology or compromise.  His poem "Seven Stanzas for Easter" addresses the modern puzzlement about Easter  with an almost brash audacity.
Make no mistake: if he rose at all
                                    It was as His body;
If the cell's dissolution did not reverse, the molecule reknit,
                                    The amino acids rekindle,
                                    The Church will fall.
In the fourth stanza, Updike rejects the idea that modern people must necessarily resort to a metaphorical explanation of the Resurrection.
Let us not mock God with metaphor,
                                    Analogy, sidestepping, transcendence,
Making of the event a parable, a sign painted in the faded
                                    Credulity of earlier ages:
Let us walk through the door.
Updike sees something "monstrous" about the Resurrection.  It is a jarring notion that doesn't sit easily within the modern world view.  It takes a certain audacity to believe it.  For anyone who has heard the biblical witness to the resurrection, it would be odd if they had not at some point asked themselves, "Is this really what Christianity teaches?  Can I accept this?" But that doesn't make it any less true.
Let us not seek to make it less monstrous,
For our own convenience, our own sense of beauty,
Lest, awakened in one unthinkable hour, we are embarrassed
                                    By the miracle,
                                    And crushed by remonstrance.
Let us, as Updike says, "walk through the door" of a robust Easter faith, and rejoice Jesus is risen indeed, and we will be raised with him!!

Faithfully in the Risen Christ,

Wardens' Corner

On March 27, St. Stephen's celebrated Easter with two beautiful services (and a visit from the Easter bunny for our annual Easter egg hunt!)  Services on Palm Sunday and throughout Holy Week were well attended and included so much of the beautiful music that helps make St. Stephen's so special. As spring arrives, we are focused on renewal activities at our campus and in our parish life.

Blessings,
John and Einar

THANK YOU for the Blessing of Easter Music

While I couldn't attend all the services held in Holy Week, I was at the Good Friday Noon service, the Easter Vigil and the 11 AM Easter Festival Eucharist, and I am compelled to praise our Music Director and Choirmaster, Mark and the Choir and instrumentalists for their outstanding performances.

The solemn Good Friday liturgy, the amazingly transformative Easter Vigil, and glorious Easter services required hours of practice and a huge commitment on the parts of all involved, especially Mark.

Please accept my sincere thanks and, I'm sure, the thanks of all who were present for any or all of the services. We are blessed and honored by your gifts.
Thank you.

T hank you for your continued financial support.  We are now through just over the first quarter of the year.  We have received almost $85,000 in total pledges which is approximately 40% of the total $212,1148 pledged for 2016.  This is a great start!
As we approach spring break and the summer holidays please keep in mind that the work and mission of the church continues throughout the year.  Your continued contributions help greatly even when you are unable to attend services.  You can send your contribution checks to the church office or contribute online by

Thank You and God Bless.

Passion 2016

The month of March definitely came in like a Lion for  Sunday School and the Youth Group.  THEY HAVE BEEN VERY BUSY!

The rehearsals for the Passion paid off!!!  On Palm  Sunday, the performance of The Passion of Jesus Christ, was so well done and such a great success.

Very special thanks go out to all the youth and kids that participated, Diana for the help directing, and for the adults that were in the play, Steve Silvester, Bob Peiser, Jamie Pines and Father Gary.

After such an amazing performance, the  Sunday School, kids of all ages, got together for some Easter FUN!!!

They all had fun decorating Easter eggs, planting Morning Glory seeds, and making bunny headbands. Thanks so much to all the teachers and parents that were there to help.

On Easter  Sunday Morning, it was all SMILES!!!

The kids had so much fun with an Easter Egg Hunt and a visit from the Easter Bunny.

Thank you to all who kindly put food in the baskets throughout the month of March for Our Lady of Fatima's Food Pantry.  I am happy to report that 3 visits were made to drop off multiple bags of food.

First Holy Communion

On Sunday, May 15 at the 10am service we will celebrate members of our Parish who will receive their first Holy Communion at a Family Eucharist. Those wishing to receive their first Holy Communion at this service must attend a 1-hour instruction regarding the sacrament of communion with Fr. Gary, on Saturday, May 14th from 2-3pm.  Each child must be accompanied by at least one parent or other grown-up at the instruction.
The Office must have the names of all those wishing to receive their first Holy Communion no later than Tuesday, May 10 th. Please contact Fr. Gary or the Office if you have any questions.

The Baby Supply is an outreach program run out of the parish hall at the opposite end of the thrift shop. We serve the community in need by supplying free, gently used infant through toddler clothing, up to size 5. We also give away strollers, high chairs, car seats (less than 5 years old that have all recalls tended to) and various other items.

At this time we are in need of a few strollers and girls' clothing 18 months and up. Spring and summer would be most useful now. If you have any of these items or know someone in need, please call me. Donations are by appointment only.  Also, please call with any questions.

I plan to have open hours in the afternoon come autumn on Saturdays, so if you have any interest in volunteering, please let me know.

Worship Ministry

The latest schedule is  here. It reflects recent revisions, so please check it out.
Four of our young people were recently trained to serve as Acolytes. The newest members of our ministry team are Thomas Day, Milan John, Lian Pines and Carter Shields. Please join in supporting them in their new calling.

Kindly contact a fellow participant in your ministry to switch weeks if you are unable to serve.

I have put together some notes for Acolytes that I hope will be helpful as a guide to their role in our worship service. The notes can be found here.

A reminder - Crucifers and Servers MUST report to the Sacristy 15 minutes before the scheduled service time. (That means 9:45 for a 10 AM service.)

Lastly, does serving at the altar bring other benefits :)?  Our very own William Longmire, one of our stalwart crucifers, was named MVP of the High School Hockey League of Nassau County's All-Star game on Saturday, April 2.  William was chosen to represent the Port Washington Vikings in the All-Star game. The Vikings were runners-up for the County championship this year, and represented Nassau County at the State championships in Jamestown, NY last month. Congratulations, William!

Thank you all for your continued service to our worship family!

 Thank you.
