Carrie Blast Furnaces Complex a featured historic site in Preservation PA 20 year retrospective
The Carrie Blast Furnaces site was recently named to Preservation PA's top 100 list as a "preservation in progress," an improvement over the endangered designation it had received 20 years ago. Now managed by Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area, plans for the site include restoration and renovations to make the site more visitor-friendly. Out of the 200 noted as historic sites by Preservation PA in the past 20 years, half remain on the "endangered" list and almost 40 were demolished or lost. The blast furnace complex, which is owned by Allegheny County, came under the management of Rivers of Steel in 2010 in a cooperative agreement between the two parties. Since then, it has become a popular tourist attraction and a backdrop for various television shows, films and music videos. The mission of Preservation PA
is to "assist Pennsylvania communities to protect and utilize the historic resources they want to preserve for the future." To read more about it, see the links below.
