 From the Office
Dear Parents,

Will we see you in September?  As we organize our classes for next year, it is very important that we hear from you if your child/children will not be returning for the 2017-2018 school year.  This is also important for grade 5 students not going to EMS.  Please email or tell Mrs. DiAngelo in our front office ([email protected]) by THIS TUESDAY if your child is NOT returning.

Please note that the (Optional) Class Placement Information Request Form link was sent out by email last week to all parents.  This online form replaces the "Letters to Mr. Weiss".  Parents of current K-4 students can use the form to provide information about their child to be considered by the administration and teachers as a factor in our process of creating classes for the new school year.  The deadline for submission is THIS WEDNESDAY at 3pm (no exceptions).

All parents have recently received a request to complete a very important Family Engagement Survey from the district. The results will have a big impact on how we understand the work we are doing with families both as a district and here at Riverside School. Please complete the survey this week if at all possible. Your input will be greatly appreciated.

We have Innovation Space Open Lab dates ( for  Riverside students with a parent),  3:15-4:15 pm  in May and June still available. You can sign up here

An important reminder: you should never back up your car in the dismissal lane at school or have children enter your car from the middle lane. This is very dangerous for our students. Also, crossing the front driveway (even with a parent) is only permitted at the marked crosswalk for every one's safety.  ALSO, the side driveway by the playground on Hendrie Avenue is for staff only and parents should never block it or drive into it (even for a few seconds) to drop anyone off or turn around. This is very dangerous to our students who are often crossing at that spot and don't expect a car to be there.

Sincerely,
Christopher Weiss
Riverside School Principal

SAME CLEATS/NEW FEET
Calling all athletes!  As your season winds down, are those cleats starting to feel a little small?  Give your old cleats a new lease on life by donating them in the box at the entry of the school.  Your cleats will be taken to Venezuela over the summer and donated to kids in need as part of the Same Cleats/New Feet project.
CALLING ALL 3RD GRADE ORCHESTRA MEMBERS
Orchestra rehearsal will be held Tuesday, May 30th at 8am in the gym. Please have your child arrive with his/her instrument and music. Students should enter the building from the outside door closest to the gym.  Mr. Hoffman will be there to greet them.  If you arrive after 8am, please have your child ring the doorbell and enter at the main door.

ALLERGY AWARENESS DAY
Word cloud concept illustration of allergies symptoms
Monday, May 22nd  will be our first Allergy Awareness Day! Please have your child wear their red shirt
as well as red sneakers or shoes if they have them (in honor of redsneakers.org,  a  foundation to educate and promote awareness of food allergies).  Look for an allergy awareness flyer that went home in your child's Friday Folder today.  You can also view the flyer here.

We will be holding a parents' education session entitled "Taking the Fear Out of Allergies" on Monday at 9am in the Media Center.  Everyone should learn how to be aware of the warning signs and action required if a child in our care has an allergy attack. Audrey Bregante, a nurse practitioner and expert from Fairfield County Allergy, Asthma & Immunology will present this and other important topics. Don't miss  this important event!

HIGH TOUCH HIGH TECH
This week, t he second grade took part in "Give me Dirt" through High Touch High Tech this week.  They learned about how soil is made, and how to classify different types of soil, and mix different soils together to grow a plant.  They also learned how to purify water using soil and how "people and animals use soil to make homes".  Soil isn't just "dirt" when it comes to plants!

The third grade's program was "Dig It" where they had a chance to "step into the world of Geology". They learned all about rocks, gems, and minerals, and how the earth makes them. The students panned for real gems and got to keep what they found!
