D
ear Parents,
A great family opportunity to experience "Making" and Innovative Learning is this weekend at the World Maker Faire, held at the New York Hall of Science on October 1-2. I have attended the past two years with my family and it is a wonderful experience, especially for children in grades 2-8. To learn more about it click here.
On Friday, October 7th at 9am, I will be sharing about Riverside's SBA English-Language Arts and Math results and the Grade 5 CMT Science results with any interested parents. The presentation will then be provided for all to view. Grade 4-5 parents will be receiving their child's SBA scores from last spring in the U.S. Mail this weekend.
An important note about dogs on the school property. Dogs are only allowed at dismissal and arrival across from the drop-off car lane. Due to allergy and other concerns, dogs are not allowed next to the school (except on the public sidewalk on Hendrie) during school hours (including an hour before and an hour after school). Dogs are not allowed on the back field or playground/blacktop areas during those hours.
Please help us keep our children safe. At dismissal, cars should NEVER back up. Please wait until there is space to move forward. Also, students and parents/caregivers should ONLY cross the pick-up lane at the two crosswalk areas.

Riverside School Principal

RANGERS LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
This week 5th grade students participating in the Rangers leadership program spent time with consultant Mr. Bart Crawford to learn about community and caring, their upcoming responsibilities as rangers, and developing leadership skills with an emphasis on our school norms - Be Here, Be Safe, and Care for Self and Others. Mr. Crawford worked with Mrs. Miserocchi and Ms. Carroll-Marino as they trained the Rangers together for their upcoming responsibilities.

Riverside School will be hosting its annual Math Marathon from Monday, October 10th to Friday, November 4th.
Classes will go head-to-head to complete as many grade-level problems on IXL as possible (outside of school time). Students must log in to their school account for problems to count in the class.
Results will be shown by grade on the front bulletin board every Monday until we announce the winner. The winning class will get to "run" around during an
extra recess on Monday November 7th, as well as other surprises. Get ready to divide (or add, subtract or multiply) and conquer math!

This past Monday, Henry Jones of Infinite Roots led our first graders in a session on African Drums. Mr. Jones played the drums for the children while they tapped and clapped to the beat. A variety of West and North African drums were played as the children learned about rhythms, improvisation, singing, dancing and g
eography.
This program was organized by the Arts in Education Committee as a result of your generous contributions to the Riverside School PTA.

This week 3rd graders participated in writing workshops led by Donato D'Albis, a Yale lecturer who teaches the craft of writing. Mr. D has worked with 4th Grade and 5th Grade students in the past and for the first time, spent a week with 3rd graders and taught them narrative writing, which is the first unit in their writer's workshop for this year. The students worked on developing personal narratives focusing on small moments.
This program was organized by the Arts in Education Committee as a result of your generous contributions to the Riverside School PTA.
