 From the Office
Dear Parents,

I would like to wish all the moms a very happy Mother's Day on Sunday!

Will we see you in September?  As we organize our classes for next year, it is very important that we hear from you if you child/children will not be returning for the 2017-18 school year.  This is also important for Grade 5 students not going to EMS.  Please email or tell Mrs. DiAngelo in our front office (Dannielle_DiAngelo@greenwich.k12.ct.us) by Tuesday, May 23rd if your child is not returning.

Please note that the (Optional) Class Placement Information Request Form link was sent out by email on Wednesday afternoon to all parents.  This online form replaces the "Letters to Mr. Weiss."  Parents of current K-4 students can use the form to provide information about their child to be considered by the administration and teachers as a factor in our process of creating classes for the new school year.   The deadline for submission is 3pm on Wednesday, May 24th (no exceptions).

I would like to offer a special thank you to all who attended our Poetry Picnic on Monday.  Guests heard original poems by students or poems picked out and read beautifully.  We all enjoyed a picnic lunch (even though it was a bit cold) with teachers, parents, and family members joining in the fun.

We have Innovation Space Open Lab dates (for Riverside students with a parent) in May and June still available.  You can sign up here.

Sincerely,
Christopher Weiss
Riverside School Principal

NOTE FROM THE NURSE
All medications in the Health Office must be picked up by a parent no later than June 20 at noon.  Any meds left after that time will be discarded.  When you pick up your child's meds, the Nurse will give you new med forms to complete over the summer.  The Nurse will be available on August 28, 2017 to accept the new medications and forms.

MINDFULNESS RETREAT

SAME CLEATS/NEW FEET
Calling all athletes!  As your season winds down, are those cleats starting to feel a little small?  Give your old cleats a new lease on life by donating them in the box at the entry of the school.  Your cleats will be taken to Venezuela over the summer and donated to kids in need as part of the Same Cleats/New Feet project.
STARelief AND PET ASSISTANCE DRIVE A SUCCESS!
Riverside Student Council and Ms. Sturman's First Graders teamed up to raise money and collect supplies for the pet assistance organization STARelief.  They help pet owners who are struggling to take care of their pets due to financial hard times.

We were able to collect over 100 cans of cat and dog food, several bags of dry food, flea collars, pet toys, blankets and towels, gift cards and cash.

A big thank you to Ms. Sturman's students who started the idea, made posters and announcements, and help collect the supplies.  Also, thank you!

CALLING ALL 3RD GRADE ORCHESTRA MEMBERS
Orchestra rehearsals will be held Tuesday, May 16th at 8am in the gym and Tuesday, May 30th at 8am in the gym.

FITNESS CHALLENGE: LAST CHANCE TO SUBMIT FORMS
kids exercise
If your child forgot to bring in the completed Fitness forms today, we will collect any last-minute submissions from the school office on Monday, May 15th at 1 1am.  Later submissions will not be eligible for the prize draw.  The form can be found here.

Second through Fifth Graders who participated in today's activities with Elite Health Systems will bring home a leaflet that explains what the fitness trainers went over with the children in their Friday Folders.  We hope they all had fun!  A big thanks to Bill Bogardus for getting the kids moving each morning this week. The Wellness Committee looks forward to announcing the individual and class winners next week.  Good luck and keep moving!

STORYTIME QUARTET
On Monday, a group called "Storytime Quartet" performed at Riverside for our First and Second Graders.  The string quartet plays classic children's tales set to classical music including compositions by Vivaldi, Bartok, and Debussy.  The children were told three stories: "The Ugly Duckling," "Little Red Riding Hood," and "Rumplestiltskin" by an engaging narrator who accompanied the music.

This program was made possible by your generous donations to the PTA.  Thank you!

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK
This week is International Composting Week.  Composting is the best way to reduce the massive amount of food waste going into landfills.   Here is a simple guide to composting at home, but please contact harrietgilmer@gmail.com if you are interested in learning more.
If you have any questions or comments, feel free to email us at riversideschoolpta@gmail.com.
