PTA Highlights
Dear Parents,

Happy Snow Day! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday break and are staying warm in these arctic temperatures! There are many exciting opportunities happening this month including our School Musical next week, AFTERS, a special screening of the Lorax movie, the school geography bee and more! Please see the information below for more details on all these events.

AFTERS
Registration for our Winter Afters session is now open and will continue through January 12th at 5:00 pm.
young_girl_gymnastics.jpgClasses begin on Monday, January 22nd. In addition to gymnastics, we will be offering an Innovation Lab class, Minecraft, and an art class. Click here to register.
SAVE THE DATE FOR THE LION KING!
Save the date for the Riverside School Musical, The Lion King, Friday January 12th at 7pm and Saturday January 13th at 11am. This year we will open up a performance to our Riverside Community on Saturday, January 13th at 11 a.m. Details to follow!
SAVE THE DATE FOR THE LORAX!
Save the date for a special screening of The Lorax in the Media Center on Friday, January 26th at 3:30pm!  Open to the first 50 children with a parent so be sure to sign up fast!  Sign up next week.
SAFETY REMINDER!
Please take a moment to read the " Rules of the Road " as a reminder about the protocols for drop off and pick up.  The goal is to keep our kids safe! All parents and any other caregivers who handle drop off or pick up for your child should review this.

We also continue to need  Safety Duty volunteers each morning from 8:30am-8:45am to help with the drop-off process to ensure kids are getting out safely and to keep the flow of cars moving smoothly. Please sign up here via our online sign up sheet for Safety Duty.
GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK
Go green in 2018 with simple changes that make a BIG Impact!  Make a resolution to commit to one with your family
1. Bring your own reusable shopping bags.
2. Eat organic as much as possible.
3. Stop buying plastic water bottles.
4. Consume LESS.
5. Recycle and Reuse MORE.

YOUR CHILD'S DIGITAL LIFE
Please mark your calendars for the following digital citizenship sessions lead by Mrs. Browning
  • Tuesday, January 9th -- Digital Citizenship in School and Beyond
  • Tuesday, February 6th -- Familiarize Yourself with Our School's Research Tools and Databases
  • Tuesday, March 6th -- Getting to Know Schoolology and Google Drive
  • Tuesday, April 3rd -- Power Apps Used in School
These sessions will from from 2-3pm in the Media Center.  An additional evening session from 7-8pm is currently under consideration, depending on demand.  If you are committed to attending an evening session for the January 9th program, please fill out this form.  The night session will run if there is enough interest.
LET GO AND MOVE ON - JUST KEEP SWIMMING
On Thursday, January 11th,  GPS and Riverside School will be celebrating the  Let Go And Move On - Just Keep Swimming
event. This is a common initiative across grade levels to promote growth mindset and the ability to make a mistake and move on.

Students will take this opportunity to l earn that it's okay to make mistakes, l earn to not give up on themselves or others when they make a mistake, and d evelop a growth mindset.

All students, teachers and staff members are encouraged to wear  BLUE on this day.
SCHOOL DISMISSAL MANAGER
Please remember to c reate a login for School Dismissal Manager to manage your child(ren)'s attendance and dismissal information by clicking  here . Our goal is to have all families at Riverside using this system.  Also, there is a School Dismissal Manager (SDM) App available so you can make updates on the go!  Please contact the front office if you no longer have the details for login.

***This is especially important as the cold weather approaches as we may leverage this technology to help with our Emergency Early Release process.
SAVE THE DATE! - PARENT PRESENTATION (SIP AND PANORAMA SURVEY)
Please save the date on Tuesday, January 23rd at 2:00 pm, there will be be a presentation for parents on the work of our school improvement plan (SIP) and the steps taken by the administration based on the feedback from the Panorama Survey last spring.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC BEE CONTEST - 4TH AND 5TH GRADES
Save the Dates for this year's Geography Bee!
The National Geographic Bee, a nationwide contest sponsored by the National Geographic Society will be held at Riverside on January 17th to 19th  from 3:20 to 4:20.  With a first place prize of a $50,000 college scholarship - plus other prizes - the Bee is designed to encourage the study of geography.
