PTA Highlights
Dear Parents,

We hope you all had a great Thanksgiving last week and invite you to join us this afternoon for our holiday sing to get in the holiday spirit. This event will be held outside this year and we encourage everyone to bring their singing voices!

Next week there will be a Meet & Greet for our new Assistant Principal, Safiya Key on Tuesday, December 5th at 9am in the cafe. We encourage you to come meet her and welcome her to Riverside.

Finally, we worked closely with the OGRCC to try to bring After School Childcare to Riverside, however we simply didn't have the minimum number of students to run the program. Sorry for any inconvenience to families who signed up.  We will open up registration in the spring for the 2018-2019 school year.

Have a great weekend!

SHOP FOR RIVERSIDE SCHOOL!
Calling all holiday shoppers!  Still looking for that perfect party dress or great gifts for the women in your life?  Fred Boutique on Sound Beach Avenue is opening its doors to Riverside School next  Friday, December 8.  Riverside School parents get 10% off all items and an additional 10% of sales go to the school!
Please stop by for some shopping, snacks and coffee and help out Riverside School's fundraising efforts.  Doors open at 9am, but the sale will be going on all day.... just mention Riverside School at checkout.

RIVERSIDE RHYTHMS
On Tuesday, November 28, Riverside Rhythms brought "The Skunk Rockets" to perform for the children during lunchtime.  This lively foursome had the kids clapping their hands to classics from the Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, and the Beatles, as well as some original numbers. The Riverside Rhythms program is funded by the PTA.
UPCOMING PROGRAMS
Dinosaurs Rock will be visiting the second grade next week.

Ask your children about what they learned!  These programs are all run thanks to your generous donations and sponsored by the Riverside School PTA.

MEET OUR NEW ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
There will be a Meet & Greet with new Assistant Principal, Safiya Key, on Tuesday, December 5th from 9-10am in the cafe.
SCHOOL LUNCH REMINDERS AND UPDATE
Lunch bag
Please consider using MySchoolBucks if you do not already have a pre-paid lunch account for your child:
1. Access MySchoolBucks using their free app on your smart phone or from their website. Set up automatic payments and receive low balance reminders.
2. Keep track of your child's spending habits and what they are buying.
3. The lunch line moves much faster with an account than when children bring in cash!

Healthier snacks are now on offer in the cafeteria. Read more here if you missed the district's food services memo.

Special snacks are now only offered to grades 3-5 on Mondays (soft pretzels) and Thursdays (cookies or ice cream). Children may purchase these items with cash or their pre-paid accounts.  You may opt out of these purchases by simply indicating on your account that purchases are for meals only.

More information on school lunches and MySchoolBucks is available here.
STUDENT COUNCIL TOY DRIVE
'Tis the season to practice the norm "Care for Others", so Riverside Student Council is hosting a Neighbor to Neighbor Toy Drive.  From now until  December 8th, we will be collecting brand new toys for boys and girls aged newborn to 16 years old.  Toys can be dropped off in the decorated boxes in the front hallway. Please encourage students to bring in toys for those less fortunate than themselves.
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC BEE CONTEST - 4TH AND 5TH GRADES
Save the Dates for this year's Geography Bee!
The National Geographic Bee, a nationwide contest sponsored by the National Geographic Society will be held at Riverside on January 17th to 19th  from 3:20 to 4:30.  With a first place prize of a $50,000 college scholarship - plus other prizes - the Bee is designed to encourage the study of geography.

The Connecticut State Bee is scheduled for April 6, 2018  and the national Bee will be held in Washington, D.C. in May.  Students need to turn in a permission form to participate in this year's Bee.  Forms are due by Wednesday, December 20th  and can be picked up and returned to an envelope outside  Mrs. Ware's door, U5.
AFTER SCHOOL CHILDCARE - ON HOLD UNTIL NEXT SCHOOL YEAR
We were not able to get enough sign-ups to meet the minimum numbers to run the After School Child Care Program through the OGRCC at Riverside School.  We will open registration up again in the Spring for the the 2018-2019 School Year as we received some feedback that shifting childcare partway through the year was too difficult.
If you have any questions or comments, feel free to email us at riversideschoolpta@gmail.com.

Sincerely,
Jenn Wolfe and Sarah Morris
