Summer Never Is Really Relevent For Stocks
Will This Year be Different?

A policy driven Summer seems crazy but asthe Summer heat is on Western governments to provide solutions and not just band-aids or kicking the can down the road.  The crisis in Europe is widening crisis. The Greek elections did nothing to restore solvency or economic growth. But the win by Greece's more conservative voters did provide a respite for Greece to stay in the E.U.  If Greece  somehow avoids bankruptcy they will still need austerity cuts and additional bail-out funds. European nations sort of won when Greece settled down as they will not have to engage in the process of extricating Greece from the euro which might have tempted other weak nations to exit.

The G20 meeting, held in Mexico, was mainly focused on solving the European crisis via tighter integration in the banking systems of EU member states. Thirteen years after the European monetary union was initiated, the EU may finally be starting to push toward a single economy. If not that than at least a tighter integration of banks. Out of the G20 came the idea to create more integrated banking supervision and implement guarantees on bank deposits moved within the Eurozone.

At  tomorrow's "Money 101 -All Things Financial" and "Wealth Preservation & Retirement Planning" seminar, I will review some of my top 15 holdings (including the obvious ones like Apple, Nike, Visa, and McDonald's but I will hit on some you have not heard about) and why I continue to hold them.  Sign up now (see right side panel.

INVESTMENT TREND:
Smokeless Tobacco?

Altria Searching for New Smokeless Products

Cigarettes as an investment should not work with rising taxes, graphic health warnings, and widening bans on smoking in bars and restaurants. Cigarette smoking is on the decline. Declining usage creates a problem for major tobacco companies like Altria, formerly known as Phillip Morris and the largest cigarette producer in the U.S. Altria got 90% of its more than $5 billion in first quarter revenue from cigarettes and cigars.

Altria and other tobacco companies have invested in "smokeless" tobacco products. Smokeless or "chewing" tobacco has a drawback which is mainly a large quantity of brown spit. In 2010, Altria started sales of the Marlboro Snus, a "spitless" product consisting of a pouch holding dried tobacco and a flavor strip.

Now, Altria is trying a new product that dispenses with tobacco almost completely. The company announced it would begin selling VERVE nicotine lozenges. VERVE is made of "tobacco-derived nicotine, nontobacco cellulose fibers, flavorings and a polymer. Adult tobacco consumers put it in their mouth, chew on it and dispose of it.

Discover Financial - A Value Stock or Value Trap?

Discover is a direct consumer bank and payments network. Discover has spent the past four years working to expand the acceptance of its namesake card in the U.S. and acquiring networks to move into debit card processing (PULSE) and overseas markets (Diners Club). The network business carries high margins and revenues have been growing rapidly in recent years. Discover has been forming numerous partnerships to extend its network business in international markets, thus generating incremental earnings without the capital commitment of an acquisition.

85% of the world's transactions are still conducted using cash and checks. The growth of mobile commerce is likely to accelerate the shift to plastic that began with the emergence of e-commerce. Discover has the opportunity to become a major global card network over time as issuers and merchants seek alternatives to the Visa-MasterCard oligopoly. Expect low double-digit EPS growth is for Discover over the next several years. At the same time, we expect the larger and more pure-play networks (Amex, Visa, & MasterCard) to grow at faster rates due to their higher profit margins and greater global presence.

WHERE INTEREST RATES ARE LIKELY HEADED

Long-term U.S. Treasury bond yields have remained at historically low levels based

on a weak global economic outlook, Federal Reserve activity that is temporarily depressing rates (but may ignite inflationary pressures over the next 24-36 months) and a flight-to-quality move by domestic and global investors in response to the

renewed European sovereign debt crisis. Looking ahead, anticipate stable bond yields through 2012 that drift higher into late 2014 as the U.S. economy recoversand a weak dollar pressures bond prices.
