Smart Money
Rock-Paper-Scissors
On Monday, 26-Jun-17, NHL teams were required to issue qualifying offers to restricted free agents. These offers allow a club to retain the right of first refusal or draft choice compensation should the player sign an offer sheet with another team.  If the player does not accept the qualifying offer before 15-Jul-16, the player is eligible for salary arbitration.  However, arbitration typically leads to a decision that favours one of the two stakeholders. Clearly, negotiations that resolve the conflict in a mutually beneficial manner are preferred, but without arbitration, Rock-Paper-Scissors might be the next best alternative.

Player Spotlight

Calvin de Haan
New York Islanders
This month's player spotlight is on New York Islanders' defensemen, Calvin de Haan. After an outstanding rookie season with the Oshawa Generals, the Carp, Ontario native became the Islanders' 12th overall selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Calvin went on to play two more seasons with the Generals, which included appearances at the 2009 and 2010 World Junior Championships. Calvin has appeared in nearly 300 NHL games with the Islanders, proving to be a pivotal member of the franchise.
Seeking a new contract this summer, Calvin is coming off a season where he set career highs in goals, assists and plus/minus. Calvin and the Islanders will continue to negotiate in order to avoid their upcoming arbitration date. Highlighting the fact that the cap is supposed to "level the playing field", Larry references GMG's popular tax calculator when discussing the challenges of teams in "high-tax states".
Earlier this month, Eric, Marc, Jordan, Jared and the entire Staal family hosted the PGA Tour Canada in Thunder Bay.
