Weekly Update
Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce

May 21, 2012

Welcome
Welcome to the Government Affairs Committee Email Update!

Happy election eve!  Tomorrow (Tuesday, May 22) is the Preferential Primary in Arkansas.  If you haven't voted early then tomorrow is your last day.  The polls open at 7:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m.

If you want to see where your polling place is or who is going to be on your ballot, go to:

I hope everyone takes the time to vote tomorrow.

If you are going to the polls on Tuesday you will likely run into a bevy of petitioners asking for your signature on the six proposed ballot initiatives that special interest groups are seeking to be placed on the November ballot.  These ballot initiatives require between 60,000 and 75,000 signatures depending upon whether they are amending the state's Constitution or not.

The six initiatives deal with casino gambling, medical marijuana, reduction in support for Arkansas Game and Fish, changes to legislative ethics laws and a large increase in the severance tax on natural gas.

I don't personally think any of the six are worth my signature, but there is only one that the Chamber formally opposes.  The attempt to increase the severance tax just four years after the last increase and amid a serious downtown in natural gas prices will have a negative impact on the state's economy and result in lost jobs and reduced investment.  The Chamber encourages you to NOT sign the petition raising the severance tax rate.

The weekly Committee update email is going on hiatus for a bit.  I am going to be giving your inboxes a rest for a while.

The next Government Affairs Committee meeting is June 15 and will feature Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel.  Click the link to the right to attend.
The June meeting is a tremendous opportunity to meet one of the state's Constitutional officers and learn how the AG's office can help your business.
