BCTV Update - January 2015
Rollout of Adobe Premiere Pro Training
Celebrating the new year with new editing software and a new way of teaching.
ADOBE PREMIERE is BCTV's new edit suite.
Announcing....the rollout of BCTV's Adobe Premiere training! Using feedback from the recent training survey (thanks to your responses), we are ready to begin training editors on the editing suite that will take the place of our current Final Cut Pro software. Why are we making this change?
  • Final Cut Pro is no longer supported by Apple
  • Its replacement, Final Cut X, doesn't offer the same level of control and "pro" features that our editors need
  • Adobe Premiere is a cloud-based software that's always updated
  • Available to producers who want to subscribe themselves and work at home
  • Runs on Mac or PC
  • Comes with a powerful suite of integrated desktop apps such as Photoshop, AfterEffects, and Audition, much like Final Cut ("Adobe Creative Cloud").

BCTV's new training format features online course delivery with staff support

What we learned from the training survey was:
  • scheduling is the biggest barrier to participation
  • individual hands-on training is essential (no sharing of equipment)

With these principles as a guide, our 2015 training series will incorporate online training delivery, staff support, and practice projects. Using online resources means training is always available.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Intro to Editing with Adobe Premiere
Two 2-hour sessions with hands-on experience and a short practicum prior to certification.
Maximum: 3 per session
Cost: $35 (waivers available on request)
Date: To be scheduled at the convenience of participants
Session 1: BCTV staff will guide trainees through the online Lynda.com Premiere Pro Essential Training, which includes work files for hands-on experience. The course will proceed at the speed of participants; each skill can be practiced, explained by staff and absorbed before moving on.
Session 2: Finish the course and complete a short project to be certified.

Sign up now to get on the list for an upcoming training. Vlasta will schedule groups of three for either:
  • Adobe Premiere for Final Cut Editors (if you have experience already) OR
  • Adobe Premiere for New Editors (if you don't).
NEW EQUIPMENT BONANZA!

Blackmagic ATEM Portable HD Field Switcher - The latest addition to our live production kit, this lightweight, low-profile rack unit is controlled by a small tablet so that BCTV (staff and volunteers) can produce HD multi-cam shoots in the field without jeopardizing our expensive, bulky studio switcher.

The switcher made its field debut in December with Landmark College Commencement, which was watched live on YouTube by 150 viewers and 350 following the live webcast.

Atomos Shogun HD Recorder - Studio producers will appreciate the 7" monitor on this replacement for the AJA Ki Pro - now you can see very clearly what's being recorded and whether it is "on," along with audio levels and video waveforms if desired. This product was backordered for months due to high demand.

Canon XA20
Like the Canon XA10 camcorder we've grown to know and love, the XA20 adds a powerful 20x zoom lens, as well as fully automatic gain control and two Class-A XLR inputs. The XA20 also has wifi features like direct clip upload and online video sharing.

Producers have been using the XA20 for recording sports events and performances where they are far away from the subject.
Kip Tewksbury: Series Producer
Kip heads off for another production.
Those of you who attended the last Producer's Night heard about how producers can use BCTV's website to submit programming online as a series or as individual shows. Kip Tewksbury, who's been producing for three years, recently organized his renewable energy-related programs into a series, Sustainable Energy Outreach Network (SEON). Kip also produces the series Vermont Workers Center and contributes to the Brattleboro Citizens' Breakfast series with Kathryn Turnas.
Upcoming Board Meeting
The next BCTV Board meeting will be Wednesday, February 18 at 6 PM in the Brattleboro Municipal Center. Please call the office at 257-0888 for details. Board Meetings are open to the public.
