Saint of the Week
A Saint is often an ordinary person who has lived an extraordinary life of virtue and faith. As Catholics we should use these exemplars to inspire us in our daily lives.
St. John I, Pope and Martyr (d. May 526)
He was born in Italy, and elected Pope while only an archdeacon. Italy's ruler Theodoric was an Arian, but recognized his Catholic subjects right to their beliefs. However, he later felt he had been betrayed by the Roman Senate and Emperor Justin I. Theodoric threatened war against Justin, but sent Pope John I, five Bishops and four senators to negotiate fair treatment for Arians. The Pope's visit helped to reconcile the Western and Eastern Churches which had been plagued by a schism. But Theodoric concluded the Pope and the emperor, were plotting against him. Pope John I was imprisoned and died, due to neglect and poor treatment.
This week pray a Rosary in his honor, his feast day is May 18th.
