Roster Draft Report: Returning Favorites & Exciting Rookies to Join Vika Azarenka on 2014 Freedoms

Billie Jean King puts the Freedoms First Round Pick on the draft board
In today's Roster Draft, the Freedoms assembled arguably their most competitive team in several seasons.  The team protected 2013 rookie sensation Vicky Duval along with 7-time Grand Slam women's and mixed doubles player Liezel Huber in the first and second rounds, respectively, drafting current world #5 ranked doubles player Marcelo Melo and Canadian Davis Cup star Frank Dancevic in the third and fourth rounds.

"Today's WTT Roster draft rounds out the 2014 Freedoms with some very strong team players," said Freedoms owner Billie Jean King. "Both Liezel and Marcelo have exceptional doubles credentials and they will be a threat in any doubles set. Vicky is just coming into her own and we look for her to be even better in her second WTT season and Frank has proven himself to be a strong team player in Davis Cup for Canada. So when you add these four with the star power Victoria Azarenka brings to our team, you have a winning combination. It is definitely going to be a competitive season for the Freedoms."

Hoping to build on her solid rookie season is 18-year old and WTA rising star Vicky Duval (right). In her first season with the Freedoms, she won over fans and teammates alike with her determined play and positive attitude. She gained valuable experience in her first Mylan WTT season, which helped her carry momentum to the 2013 U.S. Open, where she upset 2011 Champion Sam Stosur in a nationally televised match. Duval also made an appearance as a guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno this past September.

Liezel Huber (left) was the 2011 Mylan WTT female MVP and has spent 199 weeks as the World No.1 doubles player. Huber has also won 7 Grand Slam titles and 55 Career Women's Tennis Association (WTA) doubles titles. Huber also has a great relationship with new Freedom's Director of Player Personnel Lisa Raymond (more on this exciting development tomorrow!), having won the 2011 U.S. Open and WTA Championship doubles titles together. She will bring her skills and veteran experience to the Freedoms in her second consecutive season with the Freedoms.

Marcelo Melo (right), who is entering his first season with Mylan WTT, is currently the No. 5 ranked men's doubles player in the world and is a 13-time men's doubles titlist on the ATP World Tour. Melo has prior experience with Freedoms' teammate Liezel Huber, having played mixed doubles with her in the last four Grand Slam tournaments. Melo and Huber together reached the Round of 16 at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in 2013 and the 2014 Australian Open. In 2013, he reached the Wimbledon final and the U.S. Open semifinals in men's doubles.

Another rookie the Freedoms will be adding to the team this year is former No.1 Canadian player Frank Dancevic (left). Dancevic is a stalwart member of the Canadian Davis Cup team, helping Canada reach the semifinals in 2013. As three-time finalist on the ATP Tour, he figures to be a strong contributor to the Freedoms in men's singles and doubles.

Huber, Duval, Melo, and Dancevic join current world No. 4, Olympic medalist, and two-time Australian Open women's singles champion Victoria Azarenka as members of the 2014 Philadelphia Freedoms. Azarenka, the Freedoms' top pick in the February 11 Marquee Draft, will play one of seven home matches for the Freedoms in July at The Pavilion at Villanova University.  The schedule will also be highlighted by a marquee visit from 2003 US Open champion Andy Roddick (Austin Aces). Match dates will be announced later this month.
