Governor's Message   2013-2014 RI Theme Logo

The ice has gone away, the sap is flowing, and flowers have broken through the ground. April is an energizing and fun-filled month for our Family of Rotary around District 6440.

Spring fellowship and fundraising are on the docket for a number of clubs. We are beginning to share more of our success stories as a consequence of having heard some from other clubs during District Conference.Gov. Sarah Photo

Interact groups are anticipating their service activities and fundraising possibilities for the next school year. Rotary clubs who have sponsored those Interact clubs in local junior high or high schools are themselves gaining energy from involvements with "their" young people.

Our second RYLA [Rotary Youth Leadership Awards] session for the year has concluded, and stories of excitement and life-changing experiences are bubbling up from students returned from their weekend at Camp Edwards. Well-deserved thanks are getting back to Sean Nelson and his leadership team. You can hear directly from your sponsored students by featuring them at a club program prior to the end of the school year and can take pride in what you have offered to them through RYLA.

The Rotary International Convention in Sydney is less than six weeks away; and the latest information about activities, programs and speakers there is arriving at a fast pace. I hope you will join Rotarians from our district and neighboring districts in a big kick-off party on the Sydney waterfront on May 31.

Your commitment to Rotary service and to your club activities and fellowship can make positive impacts in ways that are not always clear immediately. Your contributions to those are important, and I thank you again for them.

SPECIAL NOTE: TODAY (4/27/14)CBS 60 Minutes'  Sir Nicholas Winton segment will air, 6 p.m.

"60 Minutes crew attend the event of the Stevenson High School Interact club which aired the Sir Nicky film, so perhaps there will be a few Rotary cogs displayed during the segment", said Past Dist. Gov. Dave Warring.

Sir Nicholas George Winton, MBE, (born Nicholas Wertheim; 19 May 1909)  is a British humanitarian [and 40+ year Rotarian] who organized the rescue of 669 mostly Jewish children from German-occupied Czechoslovakia on the eve of the Second World War, in an operation later known as the Czech Kindertransport. Winton found homes for the children and arranged for their safe passage to Britain.  The UK press has dubbed him the "British Schindler". [source: Wikipedia]

Two Tips for the International Convention in Australia
1.  Must have a Visa to go to Australia !  Relatively easy to get some types online.  Contact Stan Sherman, our Dist. On-To-Sydney Chair, ph: 847-736-6513, or visit the Australian visa site for more information by clicking here.

2.  Eliminate international data roaming charges with  international mobile Wi-Fi available through SyndeyConventionLogowww.xcomglobal.com.  Pricing is $14.95/day plus shipping from/to California.  Covers 1 or 2 countries for the same price.  Each device will support up to 10 devices, so you can connect your iPad, PC, and smartphones.  And if your cell phone supports Wi-Fi calling, you can eliminate voice call roaming as well.  [info courtesy of Rick Rivkin, Dist.Gov.Nominee Designate for 2016/17, gov.rick@rotary6440.org ]

Engaged Members + Vibrant Clubs + Meaningful Goals = Better Service and Enjoyment Fellowship

...and this means growing membership. Said Gov. Sarah recently, "Several clubs were recognized at District Conference for having achieved a large net increase in membership through March 31.  Though overall membership is down district-wide, those clubs have succeeded so far in engaging both their longer-term members and their newest arrivals."

The World Health Organization (WHO) Declared South-East Asia Polio Free

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) recently congratulated the countries in the South-East Asia Region of the World Health Organization (WHO) on being certified polio-free, a historic milestone in the worldwide effort to end polio and realize the broad benefits eradication will bring. The 11 countries in the region - Bangladesh, Bhutan, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Timor-Leste - are home to 1.8 billion people and represent the fourth of six WHO regions of the globe to be officially certified polio-free.

India, once deemed the most difficult place to end polio, recorded its last case on 13 January 2011, enabling completion of regional certification. Other countries such as Sri Lanka, Maldives and Bhutan have been polio-free and waiting for this day for more than 15 years.
