February 2018
Hello everyone,

There has been a lot of news in the last few days about the volatility of the share market. About 10 days ago the Australian dollar was trading around $0.80 cents, today around $0.78 cents. But did you know under the exchange rate put out by RI for the month of February for Australia, it is $1.24. It has strengthened from the rate in January of $1.32. If your Club hasn't made its payments to The Rotary Foundation for annual giving and Polio Eradication, now is a good time to do so, as you literally get more bang for your buck.

Calling all Youth Service Chairs! Have you contacted the schools with which you are involved regarding our District's Rotary Youth Projects? This month Judith Eadon is holding two Youth Service Seminars showcasing all the wonderful youth projects which will be presented by inspiring past participants of the programs. Also, I encourage your new members to attend so they too can see how Rotary Makes a Difference in our young people.

Also, for those Rotarians who wanted to be part of the Victoria Police Mentoring Program but missed out, there is now the opportunity to be part of the Ambulance Victoria Leader Mentoring Program. Contact the Vocational Chair Don Sweeney for more details.

District Conference

In just over 2 weeks many of the Rotarians from our District will be travelling to Bendigo, to the Ulumbarra Theatre (the Old Bendigo Gaol). This facility still captures many of the cells and other features of a time that has long past but also includes "a state of the art" theatre with one of the largest stages in the southern hemisphere. I am confident you too will be excited and inspired by the quality of the speakers and how they will in their way inform us of the Conference Theme "Together Towards Tomorrow". For those who love "Rock & Roll" will be pleased to know we have "Coxy and the Roxy Boys" with Wendy Stapleton for the Saturday night entertainment. A show not to be missed! Check out the website http://www.9810rotaryconference.org.au/ and follow the instructions how to register. So, get yourselves and your Club members organised to enjoy the fellowship of each other and catch up with your friends throughout the District. Register today!

I see a few Clubs are recognising International Women's Day with Dinners and Breakfasts. Great to see. Please get your non-Rotarian friends in your community to attend, as many of the beneficiaries are organisations from the same communities. Another example of Rotary: Making a Difference.

District Changeover 2018

Saturday 2 June 2018

DG Malcolm Chiverton and DGE Russell Gurney invite you to reserve Saturday 2 June in your diaries for the 2018 District Changeover to be held at Southern Golf
Club, Keysborough. More details will be provided in due course.

We have brought this forward from the original date noted in the District Directory in response to feedback from Rotarians heading to the RI Convention in Toronto.

Whilst we all work hard to make a difference, even Rotarians can't be in two places at once.
           please note.........
More and more of us are heading overseas and we always seem to return with useless foreign coins that end up in the bottom of a drawer somewhere.

Ron Brooks, RC of Forest Hill, coordinates their collection in this successful D9810 project.   In the last 3 years, 300kgs of coins and notes sent to UNICEF were valued by them at over $10,000.   Put out a labelled 200gm coffee jar at your weekly club meeting which will hold over 2.2kg of coins.

UNICEF Partnerships Manager emailed " We see Rotary and UNICEF as a perfect match, a dream fit ".   UNICEF works in over 190 countries for the rights and welfare of all children.   It supports children's health needs, clean water and sanitation, quality basic education, and protection from violence, exploitation, and HIV.

·         $2 feeds a malnourished child for  day

·          50 cents provides a dose of life-saving measles vaccine

So, get out that coffee jar and let's recycle this "scrap metal" into something valuable for kids. And while you are at it, let's give UNICEF any leftover paper money.

Rotary Club of Maroondah - New vision for serving the wider community

The Rotary Club of Ringwood was founded 49 years ago by a group of local people aspiring to the aims and ideals of Rotary International, in the same decade that Ringwood was proclaimed a city. Over the years since then we have seen our city and our region grow significantly in size. Similarly, the community served by the Rotary Club of Ringwood and the communities our members are drawn from has grown to include areas neighbouring Ringwood such as East Ringwood, North Ringwood and Heathmont.

At the local government level the expansion of the region was recognised when the City of Ringwood was amalgamated to form part of Maroondah City Council. Now the Rotary Club of Ringwood has recognised the need for a change that reflects that our geographic focus is beyond the suburb of Ringwood.

Accordingly, we would like to advise you that the Rotary Club of Ringwood is now the Rotary Club of Maroondah.

The new name is the main difference you will see. The Club will continue to support and partner with other Rotary Clubs in the District and will continue to partner with organisations across the City of Maroondah.

Request For I Devices

I wish to include an appeal on behalf of my daughter, Melanie Karajas, who recently made a presentation to the Rotary Club of Boronia about the "Music & Memory" program. The program delivers personalised music playlists that trigger memories and reconnect people with themselves and those around them. Initially for dementia patients, this program has also benefitted those with depression, anxiety and loneliness.
She runs her own charity, Mel's on a Mission, that raises awareness and resources (iDevices, iTunes cards) for those who are Licensed to provide this program in their aged or health care service.
It would be greatly appreciated if you could help and place a request for iDevices (iPod, iPhone, iPod Touch) and iTunes cards.
For any further information, she can be contacted at melsonamission@gmail.com or messaged through her Facebook page.

Many thanks
Chris Karajas

ABCD (Art Building Children's Dreams)
Presentations to District 9810 Rotary Clubs

Art Building Children's Dreams (ABCD) is an initiative of the Rotary Club of Templestowe to facilitate access to quality education for underprivileged children. The Rotary Club of Templestowe has developed partnerships with Deakin University, Aspirations Education Foundation and host Rotary Clubs through ABCD to facilitate projects in Sri Lanka (Ampara) including scholarship programs, agricultural self sustaining crops, IT Education, Sports Development, English language learning, et el.  Despite many years of post-war economic growth in Sri Lanka, many of the rural parts of the country  live in absolute poverty.  A farming family in Ampara typically lives on around US$2 per day.  Too often, rural children opt out of school as soon as they can and find work in subsistence farming.  The poverty cycle and rural disadvantage continues and adolescents soon fall victim to numerous health and social problems besetting their communities (unemployment, malnutrition, domestic violence, drug addiction and youth suicide).

The ABCD Board together with Deakin University is interested in undertaking presentations to Rotary Clubs in District 9810 over the next 2017-2018 Rotary Year.  This presentation may assist your club in identifying projects that may benefit from District or International Foundation Grants.  Should you wish to take up this offer, please contact David Shrimpton, ABCD Board member and Rotary Club of Templestowe Foundation/International Director on 0448645985.

The presentation will be jointly undertaken with Carl Jones from Deakin University.

Rotary in Action

Every Tuesday afternoon, every week of the year, between 4 o'clock and 5 o'clock, the "Rotary in Action" program spreads our Rotary message around the cities of Manningham, Banyule and Darebin - and way beyond.

"Rotary in Action" commenced broadcasting on July 4, 1995, and has been continuously on air for more than 1175 programs for almost 23 years.

"Rotary in Action" is a vibrant, magazine style format with studio guests and Rotary community announcements, occasionally mixed in with some great music.

Listeners enjoy the interaction between presenter and guest as they share the wonderful story of "Rotary in Action" via the radio band, on the internet and even connected through the various smartphone apps. The website reference to listen live is www.innerfm.org.au.

As a truly Multi-District activity Rotarians from D9810, D9800 and D9790 continue the long standing tradition with the unqualified support of the 96.5 InnerFM Community Radio organisation.

The current presenters from D9810 are Brian Tyedin, Greg King and Keith Anderson and their contact details can be found in the district handbook.

We welcome expressions of interest in joining us as a guest on the show, providing announcements for us to share with our listeners or even becoming part of the broadcast team.

Anyone interested in any of these functions can contact Greg King on
mobile 0416 045 157 or via email at gregking.rotary@gmail.com.
