June 2018

Hello everyone,

June, Rotary Fellowship Month.

For those of you who didn't attend District Assembly on the 20th May, you missed out on many information sessions. District Governor Elect Russell Gurney introduced us to RI President Elect Barry Rassin from the Bahamas. Even though things will be much the same as those of RI President Ian Riseley, there will be more of a concerted effort on membership and the formation of more Rotaract Clubs in District 9810.

If you were in the membership seminar at District Assembly, you would have received a list of all the Rotary Fellowships, a great social way to get more out of your Rotary experience. If you were not there, contact your Club President as a copy has been sent to them.

Another presentation at the beginning of the Assembly was about the Rotary District 9810 Charitable Service Trust. This Trust allows members of the public wanting to donate money to projects endorsed as a deductible gift recipient (DGR) for gift tax deductibility purposes. Now people can donate to local projects rather than going offshore. The projects that can be donated to in our District are: - Helping Hand Food Bank; Montrose & District Men's Shed; Maroondah City of Wellbeing; Manningham Inclusive Community Housing. For more details please contact PDG David Alexander or the District Treasurer Don Kinnear.

From 1st - 5th July there will be the First World Conference on Malaria in Melbourne. The District 9810 (RAM) Committee will have a stand there and Malaria Chair Peter McPhee will be there on the 4th July. https: www.malariaworldcongress.org/

For those looking for another medium to promote their projects and or fundraising activities, please don't forget the power of radio. There are 3 stations that broadcast in our District; 94.1 FM, 95.6 FM, 98.1 FM. I know the organisers of the Rotary programs for their respective stations would love to hear from you.

Congratulations to the three Rotary Clubs from the Yarra Ranges Cardinia B Cluster, Healesville, Wandin and Upper Yarra for initiating a forum for Youth and Family Health. It was a tremendously successful night and it is a tribute to the three Clubs that they all worked together to present succinct information on a variety of topics that address community situations - Domestic Violence; Addiction; Psychological Health; Cultural Issues.

We are in Changeover season. Thank you to all those who attended the District Changeover at Southern Golf Club. It was a fantastic night. I really enjoyed rewarding a few Rotarians who have worked diligently over several years with PHF recognitions. I also enjoyed presenting many Clubs with a District Recognition Certificate.

District Changeover was brought forward from the original date as many Rotarians from our District are travelling to Toronto to celebrate with RI President Ian Riseley. We wish them a terrific time and a safe journey.

The challenge this month is to have little or no one leaving your Club but plenty of members being inducted. We have two Satellite Clubs bringing in members but keep talking to your network. I am sure all Clubs would welcome a new member or two to help with the load of DOING GOOD IN THE WORLD!

Don't forget RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award). The camp is taking place from 9th - 14th July inclusive. Now is the time to find and register your Club's candidate.

Thank you, Michael Ellinger, the editor of Highlights. You deserved your recognition at District Changeover.

Thank you to everyone for Making a Difference in your community, your Club and your District.

I have enjoyed working and meeting with many of you. Now you need to Be the Inspiration (which many of you are) and continue Rotary: Making a Difference.

Best wishes to all,

Malcolm Chiverton

2018 RAM National Conference

Saturday 25th to Sunday 26th August 2018

Dear friends of RAM,

Here is the much anticipated Annual RAM Conference call for registrations.

This year's Conference is located on the fabulous Queensland Gold Coast so plan to come and stay for a while if you have time. It has been another busy year for RAM as we build towards malaria elimination in our region and malaria experts gather in Melbourne, at the World Malaria Congress in July, to strengthen commitments and refine planning for malaria elimination globally.

Our Conference will have a full agenda of inspiring presentations and an opportunity to contribute to RAM's program planning.

I look forward to welcoming you all.

David Pearson
National Manager: Rotarians Against Malaria.

Positions Vacant

The District Foundation Committee are recruiting for a Committee Secretary to take over the role from 1st July, with an induction period leading up to that date.  Knowledge of the Foundation is desirable, but not essential.  More importantly, the candidate must have a good sense of committee governance, an attention to detail and a willingness to learn about the Foundation.

This is an ideal role for those wishing to deepen their Rotary knowledge in this most important area of Rotary's operations.  If you are interested in finding out more, please contact District Foundation Chair PDG Tony Monley at acmonley+Rotary@gmail.com or on 0438 515 273.
UNICEF NEEDS YOUR FOREIGN COINS

More and more of us are heading overseas and we always seem to return with useless foreign coins that end up in the bottom of a drawer somewhere.

Ron Brooks, RC of Forest Hill, coordinates their collection in this successful D9810 project.   In the last 3 years, 300kgs of coins and notes sent to UNICEF were valued by them at over $10,000.   Put out a labelled 200gm coffee jar at your weekly club meeting which will hold over 2.2kg of coins.

UNICEF Partnerships Manager emailed " We see Rotary and UNICEF as a perfect match, a dream fit ".   UNICEF works in over 190 countries for the rights and welfare of all children.   It supports children's health needs, clean water and sanitation, quality basic education, and protection from violence, exploitation, and HIV.

·         $2 feeds a malnourished child for  day

·          50 cents provides a dose of life-saving measles vaccine

So, get out that coffee jar and let's recycle this "scrap metal" into something valuable for kids. And while you are at it, let's give UNICEF any leftover paper money.

Rotary in Action

PLEASE NOTE:
THERE'S A NEW TIME SLOT FOR
"ROTARY IN ACTION"

Every Tuesday afternoon, 52 weeks of the year, between 3 o'clock and 4 o'clock, the "Rotary in Action" program spreads our Rotary message via the radio airwaves around the cities of Manningham, Banyule and Darebin - and way beyond.

"Rotary in Action" commenced broadcasting on July 4, 1995, and has been continuously on air for more than 1180 programs since that time.

"Rotary in Action" is a vibrant, magazine style format with studio guests and Rotary community announcements, occasionally mixed in with some great music.

Listeners enjoy the interaction between presenter and guest as they share the wonderful story of "Rotary in Action" via the radio band, on the internet and even connected through the various smartphone apps. The website reference to listen live is www.innerfm.org.au.

As a truly Multi-District activity Rotarians from D9810, D9800 and D9790 continue the long standing tradition with the unqualified support of 96.5 InnerFM, the call sign of 3INR Community Radio.

The current presenters from D9810 are Brian Tyedin and Keith Anderson, both of the Rotary Club of Templestowe, and Greg King (Manningham). DGN Russell Gurney (Doncaster) is also regularly involved in an emergency capacity. All presenters' contact details can be found, of course, in the D9810 handbook.

The team welcomes expressions of interest in joining us as a guest on the show, providing announcements for us to share with our listeners, or even becoming part of the broadcast team.

Anyone interested in any of these functions can contact Greg King on mobile 0416 045 157 or via email at gregking.rotary@gmail.com.

"Rotary in Action" - every Tuesday at 3pm, 52 weeks of the year!

Hi to all.

Well this is the last edition of Highlights for this Rotary year. But do not feel too sad, because guess what! It starts all over again next month.

During the last couple of months I have been receiving messages from various Rotarian's asking me why they are not receiving a copy of the Highlights. If you a reading this message it means that you a getting a copy of Highlights, so can you please do me a favor at your next meeting and ask around if your members are getting a copy? If not maybe one person can get the their details and send them to me so that I can add them to the mailing list to ensure they get their copies from now on.

If you have any PHF's or any other special recognitions that you would like to share within the district, please forward them to me

Please remember that if your Rotary Club has any Events and Fundraising Activities planned from now or in the future, please forward the information to me at highlights9810@gmail.com .

All the best
