April 2018

Hello everyone,

Here we are in April, Maternal & Child Health Month. Talking to PDG David Alexander, he is looking to create a list of experts in the 6 Areas of Focus with a view to establishing a District Resources Network. So, if you feel you have the expertise in one of the 6 Areas of Focus or know someone else, please contact David.

As I said April is Maternal & Child Health Month, wouldn't it be great if the Clubs who are currently working in Projects in this space, get together with their Assistant Governor to do a combined display/showcase/forum of their projects. Better still, get together with the local Council as a partner, so we can inform our local communities of the great work of Rotary and the local council.

Again, all the Victorian Districts (Southern Districts) are combining again to celebrate the Annual Shine On Recognition Event 2017-2018, which is being hosted by the RC Moreland. The event is being held on Sunday 22nd April from 1.00 pm to 4.30 pm at The Meadow Greyhound Racing Function Centre, 80 Northcorp Boulevard, Broadmeadows.

As the month rolls on we will again be involved in many ANZAC Day commemorations. Many Clubs support their local communities with Schools ANZAC Services. The sense of community embodied during these events certainly contributes to cohesiveness and provides an invaluable local contribution.

Next week Whitehorse A & B Clusters are having their Volunteer Night informing the public and people invited by Rotarians and Rotaractors to see what we do. Has your Club or Cluster done something similar?

Last month I went to the RC Lilydale Information night. The members of their membership committee literally door knocked 500 local businesses and provided them with an invitation to attend the event.

If you like being part of District 9810 and your Rotary Club, you need to act now. JUNE WILL BE TOO LATE. In the last few years we averaged losing 90-100 members a year in District 9810. For everyone reading this article, it is now time for you to ask someone to come along to a meeting or an event, not be left to the President or Membership Chair. Before you say I have asked all my friends, go back to the old way we used to get members, by their classification. How many Classifications are missing in your Club. When were they last asked to come along and see what you do.

Our District currently sits at 1117 members. Historically we lose 20-30 members in June, not to mention those people who will leave before June. That says to me, for District 9810 to stay in business, all Clubs must induct one new member before the end of this Rotary year. If each Club can induct 2 or more members that will give us traction to do more "Good in the World". Has your Club got involved in "Partner" memberships or "Organisational" memberships? Please do so, it can be rewarding for them as well as you.

Next month we have District Assembly, where we will learn about the direction of RIPE Barry Rassin. Also, there will be breakout sessions for those with Club positions and those "New Members" and not so "New Members". I believe each of us can learn something new and beneficial at these events.

Continue to Make a Difference and Be the Inspiration. I look forward to seeing you there.

Positions Vacant

The District Foundation Committee are recruiting for a Committee Secretary to take over the role from 1st July, with an induction period leading up to that date.  Knowledge of the Foundation is desirable, but not essential.  More importantly, the candidate must have a good sense of committee governance, an attention to detail and a willingness to learn about the Foundation.

This is an ideal role for those wishing to deepen their Rotary knowledge in this most important area of Rotary's operations.  If you are interested in finding out more, please contact District Foundation Chair PDG Tony Monley at acmonley+Rotary@gmail.com or on 0438 515 273.

UNICEF NEEDS YOUR FOREIGN COINS

More and more of us are heading overseas and we always seem to return with useless foreign coins that end up in the bottom of a drawer somewhere.

Ron Brooks, RC of Forest Hill, coordinates their collection in this successful D9810 project.   In the last 3 years, 300kgs of coins and notes sent to UNICEF were valued by them at over $10,000.   Put out a labelled 200gm coffee jar at your weekly club meeting which will hold over 2.2kg of coins.

UNICEF Partnerships Manager emailed " We see Rotary and UNICEF as a perfect match, a dream fit ".   UNICEF works in over 190 countries for the rights and welfare of all children.   It supports children's health needs, clean water and sanitation, quality basic education, and protection from violence, exploitation, and HIV.

ยท         $2 feeds a malnourished child for  day

ยท          50 cents provides a dose of life-saving measles vaccine

So, get out that coffee jar and let's recycle this "scrap metal" into something valuable for kids. And while you are at it, let's give UNICEF any leftover paper money.

Request For I Devices

I wish to include an appeal on behalf of my daughter, Melanie Karajas, who recently made a presentation to the Rotary Club of Boronia about the "Music & Memory" program. The program delivers personalised music playlists that trigger memories and reconnect people with themselves and those around them. Initially for dementia patients, this program has also benefitted those with depression, anxiety and loneliness.

She runs her own charity, Mel's on a Mission, that raises awareness and resources (iDevices, iTunes cards) for those who are Licensed to provide this program in their aged or health care service.

It would be greatly appreciated if you could help and place a request for iDevices (iPod, iPhone, iPod Touch) and iTunes cards.

For any further information, she can be contacted at melsonamission@gmail.com or messaged through her Facebook page.

Many thanks
Chris Karajas

Rotary in Action

PLEASE NOTE:
THERE'S A NEW TIME SLOT FOR
"ROTARY IN ACTION"

Every Tuesday afternoon, 52 weeks of the year, between 3 o'clock and 4 o'clock, the "Rotary in Action" program spreads our Rotary message via the radio airwaves around the cities of Manningham, Banyule and Darebin - and way beyond.

"Rotary in Action" commenced broadcasting on July 4, 1995, and has been continuously on air for more than 1180 programs since that time.

"Rotary in Action" is a vibrant, magazine style format with studio guests and Rotary community announcements, occasionally mixed in with some great music.

Listeners enjoy the interaction between presenter and guest as they share the wonderful story of "Rotary in Action" via the radio band, on the internet and even connected through the various smartphone apps. The website reference to listen live is www.innerfm.org.au.

As a truly Multi-District activity Rotarians from D9810, D9800 and D9790 continue the long standing tradition with the unqualified support of 96.5 InnerFM, the call sign of 3INR Community Radio.

The current presenters from D9810 are Brian Tyedin and Keith Anderson, both of the Rotary Club of Templestowe, and Greg King (Manningham). DGN Russell Gurney (Doncaster) is also regularly involved in an emergency capacity. All presenters' contact details can be found, of course, in the D9810 handbook.

The team welcomes expressions of interest in joining us as a guest on the show, providing announcements for us to share with our listeners, or even becoming part of the broadcast team.

Anyone interested in any of these functions can contact Greg King on mobile 0416 045 157 or via email at gregking.rotary@gmail.com.

"Rotary in Action" - every Tuesday at 3pm, 52 weeks of the year!

If not maybe one person can get the their details and send them to me so that I can add them to the mailing list to ensure they get their copies from now on.
