Let 'em Go!
During the month of April, Kindergarten students watched caterpillars grow into butterflies as part of their science curriculum. Mrs. Sorensen's class spontaneously held hands around the butterflies before releasing them.

Best Pennies Prank

The Pennies for Patients program celebrates fundraising creativity with Fun & Funky Awards. WMPS's photo submission in the "Best Pennies Prank" category featured Principal Katie Thompson getting slimed. The photo was posted on Facebook with the other finalists, and the photo that received the most Facebook votes won the award. WM was the champion, winning a $25 gift card! Thank you to all who voted for WM!

Students contemplate how to remove popovers from their baking dishes.

Miller Hangs Up Her Apron

After 36 years (32 at WM), Ms. Miller plans to retire from teaching food, child psychology and human relations. Though she will not miss almost daily trips to the grocery store, she will miss students and staff dearly!

Foods students compete to see if their finished product is good enough (or bad enough) to get memorialized on Ms. Miller's office window.
Clay Target Team
The new WM Clay Target Team took 3rd place out of 8 teams in their first week of competition.

25 students registered for our Royal clay target team this spring. They join more than 8,600 boys and girls in grades 7-12 in this rapidly growing Minnesota State High School League sport. To learn more, like the WM Clay Target Team facebook page or visit the State High School League Clay Target website

Special thanks to the Lions Club, the Watertown Gun Club, and many volunteers for supporting our team this season!

Math Minds

Six math students traveled to Mankato to compete in Minnesota State University's annual math competition. All students had a fun time! Two WM students scored within the top 30% of scorers: Sierra Lhotka and Luke Juusola. Way to go Royals!

Awesome Art

Ms. Jayne and her WMES artists have been quite busy filling the hallways with awesome art! Check out these projects based on the work of painter George Rodrigue and sculptor Will Kurtz.

Also, take a look at how art and academics combine in these linoleum block prints of historical figures from the American Revolution.

Science Superstars

Eighteen WMES students participated in the Regional Science Fair in Mankato. The Royals presented 15 of the nearly 1000 projects on display.

WM projects received 10 purple and 5 blue ribbons. Anja Gilbert and Hans Anderson earned a gold trophy in their division, and Allyana Leitch received a CSET photography award. Way to go, Royals!

FFA News
Several members of the WM FFA chapter attended a state-wide "Women in Agriculture" conference at the U of M Arboretum. The conference aims at empowering and motivating young women to work in the agricultural field.

FFA members and students from the WMHS plant science class kicked off the crop plot season by picking rock on their 70 acres. The prize for the largest rock found mid-field went to Sam Egan, Ryan Dressel and Garrett Hilgers.

FFA members represented WM at the State Convention.

Night Out For Music

Coming May 9th! This fun dinner concert and award ceremony will feature WMHS instrumental and vocal ensembles.

Mapping Continents

8th grade students recently studied the geography of Europe. The map started out with puzzle-like assembly. Then students identified countries, land forms and more.

Mystery Photo Reveal

We had a few interesting guesses this month including Mr. Hangartner, Ms. Pauly and Michael Burns, but the correct answer is Ms. Sara Marquette!

Both Ms. Marquette and her sister, Amy, are on the Buffalo High School Wall of Fame because they were State FFA Supervised Agricultural Experience Champions for sheep production.
New Mystery Photo

Which Royal is standing on this state track and field podium? S ubmit  your guess to royalnews@wm.k12.mn.us! The answer will be revealed next month with an especially awesome (maybe embarrassing?) throwback photo reveal.
