Principal's Point

Dear SVA Families,
Happy Spring! We are excited for the warm weather and we all know that means Spring Break is just around the corner.  Spring Break is April 10-17, students returning on Tuesday, April 18th.  When we return from Spring Break, we only have about 6 weeks left of school which is hard to believe. 
 The  third quarter ended on March 17th and report cards will be sent home tomorrow, March 24th.  Next Wednesday,      March 29 th  will kick off our Spring MAP assessment for students in grades K-8.  Teachers will communicate your child's testing date. Please encourage your child to do his/her best.
   On Saturday, April 1st, PTSA will host an Easter Bunny breakfast for all families beginning at 9:00 a.m.  The Easter bunny will be here for pictures. We will also have our annual egg hunt in the back field starting at 10:00 a.m.  We hope to see you there!

May Matters - Be Present

The 2017 KPREP testing for students in grades 3-8 is scheduled between May 10 and May 16, 2017.  Please avoid scheduling appointments and vacations during this testing window. Students should also avoid being tardy and absent during this time frame!
 Tonight Royal Roll Out -  Skate Night 

Join us tonight for the Royals Roll Out Skate Night!  All students are welcome to join us from 6-8 p.m. at the  Independence Skateway. Tickets are purchased at the door for $5 with $1.50 for skate rental.   Concessions will also be available.  We have two more months of Skate Nights - April 20th & then our last Royal Roll Out Skate Night of the year will be held Thursday, M
ay 18th.

All Pro Dads Breakfast 
Tomorrow Morning

Join us tomorrow morning at 7:15 a.m. for the All Pro Dads Breakfast.  Team up with other SVA dads and kids for a quick, before-school breakfast. During breakfast, a presentation on fatherhood and family topics will be presented.  Our last All Pro Dads Breakfast for this school year will be Friday, April 21st!  If school is canceled or delayed due to the weather, we will NOT have the breakfast.


Seussville STEAM Literacy Night
RSVP's Due March 24th!

The Seussville STEAM Literacy Night is scheduled for Thursday, April 6th.  Invitation flyers were sent home with all students last week.  If your family plans to attend this event, please submit your RSVP (bottom portion of flyer) by Friday, March 24th. The Northern Kentucky Parent Leadership is hosting a Basecamp on Saturday, April 29, 2017 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  The Basecamp is held at the Kenton County Public Library, Covington located at 502 Scott Boulevard in Covington.  Space is limited, so if interested, please register soon.  The flyer below will outline the program and provide link to register.



The Confidence Project
for 6th Grade Girls

The Confidence Project is being held for all SVA 6th grade girls.  The first session of four one-hour sessions began on Wednesday, March 22nd. The goal of this session is to help each student self-identify her strengths, her unique ability to solve problems, and her core power. Our guidance counselors, Rachel Mercer and Olivia Ballou will be working with Master Misty Elder from Legacy Taekwondo to help the girls identify the best in themselves.  Pictured below are students working with Master Elder during their first session.





Missing Items?

If your son/daughter has lost articles of clothing, a lunch box, purse, etc., please have them check lost and found.  The lost and found bin is located in the cafeteria (K-5) stage.  Parents are more than welcome to visit school and check lost and found for lost items. All items unclaimed will be donated.


2017-18 Prep/Prep+ 
Acceleration Plan Guidelines

The Kenton County School District has released the guidelines for the ELA/Prep and Prep+ Acceleration Plan, as well as, the Math/Prep and Prep+ Acceleration Plan.  The programs provide high achieving academic students content acceleration in English/Language Arts and math to prepare them for advanced placement and dual credit courses while in high school. PTSA Flower Sale

PTSA flower sale ends on  Monday,
March 27 and benefits instructional media, technology, and our STEAM labs! Information will be sent home with students today (Thursday).Earn special prizes: Pokémon / Emoji Bags and an opportunity to participate in an ice cream party!
 
Please note that all orders must be paid in full and returned to the school by Monday, March 27.
 
Flower sale pick up will be Sunday, May 7 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. We welcome volunteers to help enter orders online and to assist with the big delivery day. Please contact Dan at  [email protected] if you would like to volunteer or if you have any questions.

Smith's STARS



Students in grades 6-8 who demonstrate what it takes to "land among the STARS" were nominated by their teacher to be the recipient of the Smith's STARS award.  Students chosen will receive a special award and get to eat lunch with Mrs. Smith.  Congratulations to our March Smith's STARS!

Student Placement Policy
Student Placement Window April 17-28, 2017

This policy establishes a procedure for appropriate placement of individual students in homeroom classes in order to meet the needs of all students.   The Student Placement Policy is for students who will be entering grades K-3 for the 2017-18 school year.  Students in grades K-3, parental input can be submitted in writing to the Principal on the Student Placement Form. If you would like a Student Placement Form, please send the bottom portion of the form which is found by clicking the link below.  All who have requested a Student Placement form, they will be sent home on April 17th. 

Student Placement forms submitted after the
deadline  of April 28th will not be accepted.



E=WISE2 Needs Your Help!!

The E=WISE2 Team is still collecting plastic lids and caps to recyle four our new bench.  We currently have a little over eight 55-gallon garbage bags full and we need approximately 10.   Please help our team by sending your lids and caps to school with your child! SBDM Minority Parent Needed

If a school has 8% or more minority enrollment at the beginning of the school year, the school must have minority representation on their school council.  At this time, we do not have minority representation on school council.  The SBDM Council criteria states the representative must be the minority. The schools SBDM council meets the third Tuesday of the month at 4:00 p.m.  The purpose of SBDM is to discuss and make recommendations for student achievement.  The school will hold a minority member election in the next few weeks.  If you are interested in running for SBDM or have questions, please contact Lesley Smith, principal at  [email protected]  or 859-359-9600.

Royals Work Ethic Program
The Royals Work Ethic Program is an exciting way of honoring students who demonstrate a commitment to community.  Each quarter will begin an opportunity for your child to meet the ten (10) academic standards necessary for this award.  Every student who successfully completes these requirements will receive a certificate at the end of the quarter, and those who meet standards for 3 of the 4 quarters will be recognized at the Royal Work Ethic Banquet in May.   If your child would like to participate, please return the permission slip.  The Community Service form is due for the 4th quarter is  April 27, 2017.

ARCHERY
The archery team has qualified for the state tournament which will take place in Louisville on Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1. All of our archers will be shooting on Saturday with the exception of Branick Hale. Good luck to our archery team!

BASKETBALL
A basketball clinic will be held for 2 days in September, and will be operated by the SVA coaching staff. The clinic is open to 6th-8th grade boys and girls. The clinic will include quality instruction on basketball skills. The cost of the clinic is $30.  
Basketball try outs begin in mid-October. Basketball is open to 6 th -8 th grade boys and girls. There are 6 th , 7 th , and 8 th grade teams for the boys and girls. Students can only compete in their grade level program.  SVA participates in the Northern Kentucky Middle School Athletic Association (NKMSAA). The season begins in November and ends with a post-season league tournament in February. The teams play approximately 20 games plus a post-season tournament. Additional tournaments may be played in the preseason or over the winter break at the discretion of the coaches. The fee in basketball will be $30 as well as an additional $30 fee for a personalized warm-up shirt for each participant. 

CHEERLEADING
A cheer clinic will be held on April 24 & 25 from 6:00-8:00 PM. The clinic will be operated by the SVA coaching staff. The clinic is open to 4th-8th grade girls. The clinic will include quality instruction on cheer skills. The cost of the clinic is $20. Forms can be found by clicking the link below, on the SVA website on the Athletics link or in the Athletic Director mailboxes in the last week of March.


The SVA cheer season begins with tryouts on July 11-13 for 4th-8th grade girls. Cheer is a continuous session that goes from July-February. SVA cheer will have a spirit cheer squad and 2 competition squads, 4th-6th grade and 6th-8th grade. 6th-8th grade spirit squad will cheer all varsity football games home and away, and all home junior varsity football games. The spirit squad will also cheer the boys' and girls' home basketball games, and championship games in the post-season.
Parents should be prepared to purchase additional items to compliment the issued uniforms. Competition squad participants will also pay for practice time at an off-site gym.

CROSS COUNTRY
SVA Cross Country is open to 4th-8th graders. A Parent/Athlete Meeting will take place on Tuesday, July 25. Practices begin on Thursday, July 27. The season will end in October. Students compete against other middle school programs throughout Northern Kentucky. SVA hosts at least two cross country events, and compete in 7-10 meets. 

FOOTBALL
Football Interest Meeting - Wednesday March 29 - 2pm addressing the 5th, 6th, and 7th graders A sign- up sheet, and information about the SVA Football Program and the purpose and expectations for Spring Football, and all required documentation to participate. Spring Football Practice - Monday April 24 thru Friday April 28 - 6pm to 730pm. It will take place in the gym and on the football field. Cleats preferred but no required. Bring gym shoes and a water bottle.
SVA Football is open to 6th-8th graders. Football starts with one week of Spring Training in April. Full practice begins in July. The team practices in the evening from 6:00-8:00 at the SVA football complex located behind the school. SVA participates in the Northern Kentucky Middle School Athletic Association (NKMSAA). Three levels of play (JV, 7th, & 8th) will compete in a 5-10 game schedule with varsity attending a post-season tournament if it qualifies. Football is a no-cut sport.

TRACK
Track practices take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15-5:00. Track season ends in early June with the State Championship in Louisville.

VOLLEYBALL
A volleyball clinic will be held on May 17 and May 24 from 3:15-6:15, and will be operated by the SVA coaching staff. The clinic is open to 5th-8th grade girls. The clinic will include quality instruction on volleyball skills. The cost of the clinic is $30. Forms can be found by clicking the link below or on the SVA website on the Athletics link, or in the Athletic Director mailboxes in the last week of March.  

 
Volleyball tryouts will be held July 17-19 from 9:00-noon. Volleyball is a "girls only" activity open to 6th-8th grade girls.  The current program consists of three squads including 6th grade, junior varsity, and varsity grade teams. The season begins August and concludes with a conference tournament for each team in early October. The fee in volleyball will be $30 as well as an additional $25 fee for a personalized warm-up shirt for each participant. Information can be found by clicking the link below.


WRESTLING
Wrestling begins in October. Wrestling is open to 4th-8th grade boys and girls. Wrestlers compete against other Northern Kentucky middle school and club programs, and will host at least one tournament at SVA. More information about wrestling will be forthcoming in the next newsletter. We are excited about the future of wrestling at SVA.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FREE THROW CHAMPIONSHIP
The Knights of Columbus State Free Throw Championship will be held at Bethlehem High School in Bardstown, Kentucky on March 26 at 1:00. Good luck to SVA students Natalie Hernandez-11 year old girls and Wilfredo Hernandez-14 year old boys.

Dress Code
At Summit View Academy we rely upon a system of supervision and monitoring by staff and surveillance cameras to provide and maintain a safe school environment.  All students attending SVA are required to follow the Dress Code. The Dress Code can be viewed by clicking the link below.   



K-5 Enrichment Schedule
Classes in grades K-5 participate in enrichment classes using an A-E rotation schedule.  Using this type of schedule ensures student receive equal instructional time in all enrichment classes.  Enrichment classes will not be on a specific day of the week.  They will be changing throughout the school year when school is not in session.
